Should i buy this mixer....

hey all well im like just starting off with the recording stuff and i have a semi and a mic which were really expensive but now im looking for a really good mixer and i have my eye on this http://www.zzounds.com/a--2676837/item--BEHUB502?trk=smx
its is good money wise for me and spacious but im just checking before i buy

In one word.....no. That "mixer" only has one mic input, and I guarantee you that you will want more than that one mic input later on. I would take a look at the Yamaha MG series mixers, such as this one. It is not all that much more expensive, plus you get 4 preamps instead of one, plus the build quality is most likely better than the Behringer (at least that has been my experience with that brand). You don't even get phantom power with the Behringer mixer!! If your mic is a condenser, you will need phantom power (unless it takes batteries, but phantom power is much nicer, IMO).

My recommendation: skip it.

Phantom power is a widely-used method for supplying current to devices over signalling cables, especially audio. This is most often used for condenser microphones, and occasionally microphones of other types.


a preamp is a device that allows you to add gain to a microphone signal.

maybe you should read up a little more? phantom power and preamp are two pretty basic terms. Maybe you are European? If so , I apologize. I know Europeans, some of them have different names for these things.

I just bought the Yamaha MG 10/2 recently, and I am pretty pleased with it. I guess my only complaint is that I really wish it had a sweepable midrange EQ. For years, I had been using a Tascam 424mkii 4 track recorder as my mixer for most purposes and really came to appreciate the little xtra control the sweepable mid gives. But, that said, the Yamaha mixer is still really sweet. Definately worth the 99 bucks, even if the Behringer stuff looks a little cooler.

Yeh the beringer stuff does have a fancy look and all that but its pretty stupid that it doesnt even have an off switch!
so the yamaha is on the table....any others i should consider?

I would avoid most Behringer mixers. The preamps can be very noisy (a nasty hiss), and I have seen a lot of them shut down with minimal use.

The Yamaha MG10/2 is quality, and so are some Mackie products.

Run away from that Behringer. Very fast. Seriously, I would stay away from them. You can get much better quality for not that much more money.

My' brutha', not knowing your budget (nor knowing what you require in a mixer; # of tracks, bussing options, quality pres etc) & stating that you own a decent quality mic, allow yourself the chance to research other mixers.
Don't be fooled by a unit's numerous "bells, whistles & overall cosmetically appealing" appearance or it's decpetive lo price. Determine what you want in a mixer,do comparisons and research the many opinions, advice and comments presented here, there and elsewhere. After studying all the info presented to you, then decide as to what mixer you will spend your hard-earned $$$ for.


BTW Trev, what was it that Beh's UB made you inquire about it?

While considering Behringer, I think it's worth noting their marketing strategies and company policy. Apparently, Behringer doesn't make anything of their own. It seems that their entire practise is to reverse engineer everyone elses gear and under cut them by not having to pay for research and development. Note the Mackie ad that started with 'Behringer, sharpen your pencils' !
Which company you buy from is up to you. But being a little conscientious is worth the extra money (to me anyway).

I have used both the little Yamaha and the Soundcraft compact 10 and the soundcraft blows away the Yamaha on all counts (got rid of the yamaha)

The nice thing about these mixers is that they have a bunch of differenct inputs
, descrete record bus, and two headphone channels making them VERY flexible for just about everything

Yes, it has two sets of RCA inputs that are switchable from instrument to phono level.

HELL FUCKING NO!!!!!!!

Yo' Trev, don't just take MY word for it!! Go to ANY OTHER RECORDING-BASED BBS ON THE WWW and ask this same question there! Pay heed to the responses you get from folks who've have at least 7-10plus yrs of rec'ding experience under thier belt. The majority of the "positive" responses & opinions on Behringer mixers usually come from those whose 1st and only mixer ever used was a Behringer!

My 1st board was Beh's MX2624 (a horrible mistake! I was suckered in by it's cosmetic appearance). Being a former gear junkie, I now own a used Mackie 1202VLZ, Alesis S-24 & S32 & a Topaz 24/8 and cripes, you can hear the diff between any of my average boards and Beh's crap!

Do a "SEARCH" here and check out the the opinions posted by many specifically the negative reviews given by pro's Harvey Gerst and the late, great Stephen Paul (if still available). Then check out the "glowing praises" mostly posted by those who are basically 1st timers/newbies of recd'ing.

I'm no PRO, but I do know crap.

Behringer Mixers are @ss-crap!
