I tried to do a search and didn't seem to find what I was looking for so I thought I would just ask.

Has anyone used a shotgun mic for recording and if so, what did you use it for and how did it turn out.

I understand thier use for out in the field or in TV, but kind of curious if thier narrow pattern would translate well into recording music in a studio.

I just thought it might be a fun thing to discuss and since I have the means to be able to use a few of them, I will just try them out myself sometime.

Excellent post on shotguns by DSatz here:

Wow, really took the wind out of my sails with that. I had a sneaking suspicion that they wouldn't translate well, especially with my tiny little studio, but I thought it would a fun little experiment to try.

Oh well, maybe I'll still borrow a couple from work and give it a try anyway.

Thanks for the link.

I had always wondered about using a shotgun mic in the studio because of the high sound rejection off axis. I had always wondered if it would make a good snare mic, where you can set it up out of harms way and able to pickup a more natural snare sound as opposed to being 2 to 3 inches away.

I had always hoped the extreme narrow pattern would let you "zoom in" on the snare.

Has anyone tried this?

I will admit to trying it a few years ago with a halfway decent shotgun mic. Complete waste of time.

I appreciate that!
Saves me the cost and effort of finding that out first hand!
