Just what is their function, and are they primarily for instrumentalists or singers? I really don't know.

shockmounts are for EVERYONE! :D when doing the recording thing. vibrations on the floor (i.e. scuffing about with your feet and loud guitar cabs) will transmit through the stand and thus vibrate the microphone and the mic element. wether you're using a vocal condensor or an SM57 to mic a guitar cab shockmounts can be handy to help avoid distortion caused my external vibrations. it's all about controling the ENTIRE recording environment. so shockmounts would apply to both in short. live use is sometimes a little more demanding than studio use since in the studio the room is controled rather well anyway.

Thanks ZP.

Although I did have a rough idea as to what shockmounts (by virtue of the name) helped to minimize, I wasn't certain as to whether they were aimed at the vocalist, or instrumentalist, and whether they we would be truly warranted in a 'studio' setting as opposed to a live gig. But your input helped much, and I think that I may consider purchasing such an item as an addition to my upcoming mic.

you might want to look at a sabra-som universal shockmount. www.oktava.com has them for $49. i don't know anyone who has used them but they look like they'd work.

for the sake of frugality I bought 3 fairly universal shockmounts from www.tensimount.com I would definitely reccomend them as they are extremely easy to use and small enough to carry several easily in a small crannie in a case. they cost about 12 bucks a piece and the guy ships FAST. it is a homegrown design and is now professionally made and very Durable IMO.. I'm just a happy customer :-) .. the shockmounts are just to inexpensive and to warrant buying anything else. It fits SM58 style mics perfectly. anything bigger than that and you'd be puching it.
