Is no one interested in this? I figured everyone would show a little more interest at least.
If anyone is interested in having more clips done, let me know and I'll work on it some. If not, I wont bother posting them.
I'll try to get a few pictures next time too.

I thought the tone was pretty good. I like how ribbons kind of get rid of the fizzle, fo shizzle.

Cool. No one has replied about hating it yet, maybe thats a good thing.

I dug the tone man. I have been wanting to get me one of those shiny box ribbons just to try one out. Thanks for posting!

Someone over there said it sounded "very produced"
This was the easiest setup I've ever attempted at getting a sound.
Is the mic a keeper? I think it may be.

Nice tone. Very classic-sounding to me. I love the smoothness of it; no fizz here.

What an incredibly cool day I had! Wagener is the coolest MF'er of all time.

Today the Shinybox hung its pecker out besides the likes of the Royer 121, 122, 122v, a Reslo ribbon, Beyer 500, Sm57, Mojave Audio (m200 isnt it?) Senn 409, Senn 609, a new Horizon tube mic, a Nady tibbon, a Fostex ribbon, another 2-3 I'm not thinking of.

I'll elaborate a little more pretty soon, but let me just say that the Shinybox held its own for the most part, and definately didnt suck compared to the others. I DO think, however, that because of what I heard today, that I'm going to upgrade the transformer as soon as I can get it here. Thats not saying the current one is bad, I just think that if I can get this mic to open up just a HAIR, that it will be the best $250 investment I've made, possibly ever, in recording.

Now, if I can convince you to go out and buy a $30 George L guitar cable and a Redeemer for your favorite studio guitar... man... just do it, you'll be surprised. Michael def sold me on the George L cables. Stomped all over the Monster, and yes, you could hear the difference. I kid you not.

Peace!
Paul

OK so what's a Redeemer?

And what was the pre you used for the first sample?

The sample I posted is straight into a BAE 312a

The Redeemer... go to the guitar forums and read the post I made. SHould be the only one there authored by me.

Tubedude,

Did Mr. Wagener have an opinion of the Shinybox or any of the less expensive ribbons vs. Royer 121?

I think hearing the soloed naked guitar tracks would be interesting also.

Using Ribbons is always a good thing for capturing guitar cabs after watching a cool clip of them micing a Marshall Plexi video I seen with a Royer and Sm57 combo and listening to the SM57 by itself then when they added the Royer ribbon I was like whoa! so I had to get a Ribbon so of course the Royer was way out of my price range and Beyer was too, I decided between a Nady and the Shinnybox so I went with the Shinnybox and couldn't be happier with the new to mic combo technique=better guitar sound.

We liked it. It wasnt bad, it just wasnt quite as full as the $2700 (!) R122v but at seriously 11 times less money it was maybe 98.6% of the quality. The Royers just had a little extra something more, but it wasnt much, and it wasnt a big deal. He suggested I keep it and thought it a good mic. I intend to. I THINK, though I'm not remembering now, that we liked it better than the Nady's, which are his by the way. He uses them sometimes.
Beleive it or not, we all (another guy stopped in later) really liked the GT convertible (like $99 I think) on this particular guitar rig. I'm wanting one and working on getting a demo right now.

So you like the Shiny?
If we didnt use a bands DI track we could have posted the samples. But alas...
