Shinybox Mics

I konw there was a bit of hype about the shinybox ribbons a few months ago, and I thought I'd just chase it up and see how those who bought them felt about them.

As for me, I picked up a SB 23, but, apart from mucking around at home, I didn't really have a use for it until the other day.

I used it on a harp in a mid-feild position (it was a live gig and far-feild picked up too much ambient noise), running through an Onyx 800r and into an HD24XR.

If anyone's interested, I'll post a couple of clips once I'm done with teh mixdown (which I'm supposed to be doing now, but a bit of procrastination always helps).

Also, if anyone has purchased the SB 46 I'd like to hear opinions on it as I'm considering adding one to my collection. Specifically, if anyone has heard the difference that the cinemag/lundhal transformers make, and if they're worth it.

ok, i'll whack up two clips from the show- one of teh SB 23 track, and one of the mixdown.

I'd put them up now, but I've also manged to get lumped with doing the video mix as well, and a "technical error" (read: a screwup of mine) just put me back by about 2 hours.

Damn I hate that...

The former is the raw track straight from the mic, the latter is the mixdown in it's current state.
This is just one random track out of the concert (about 3 hours long) and it just happened to be the one that the HD24XR was up to when I hit "record". (On that note, I really have to commend Alesis on the whole "instant locate" thing. That is totally awesome. "Oh crap, i fuxored that last track.. wait.. click... ah, there we go!")

The Vocals were recorded with a KMS105, and the harp also has 2x MK-012s (Hypercardiod caps) in X/Y close-mic position to pick up the soundboard, and to give a little presence to the harp.

That's a quick screencap to show mic placement. There is a fourth mic on the harp, some random AKG, that was put here by the house guy to get a bit of harp through the PA and into the camera for sync, but you can clearly see the SB23 and one of the oktavas. It's a bit qwonky as the cameraman forgot to turn off interlacing and we used an animorphic lens, but you get the general idea...


As for the SB46, can't help you there. But I'm konwn for my impulse buys, so when I get paid next I might just up and buy one just for shits and giggles... then I'll let you know...
 
I really like my Shinybox 23. The tinkerer in me opened it up and there is, IMO, an excessive amount of screening and shielding. I took out the mesh and silk "sheath." That leaves the outer screens and screens directly over the ribbon. I can't really tell too much of a difference, but all the parallel surfaces in there can't be doing any good. The nice thing about the shinybox over the Nady is the Nady has a extra blast sheild (so I've heard) on one the front side only, which could make the sides sound different and therefore ruin the mic's usefulness in stereo applications.
 
I was actaully thinking about using the 23 in mid/side with one of my other LDCs for the harp, but when I got to the venue and saw the audience flanking the stage, I thought it might not go down so well...

The venue, btw, was the Stables Theatre in Sydney. Not the biggest venue, but the lack of any parrallel surfaces makes for a great recording space.

Once the video editing is done, I'll see if I can get a better pic for you (a de-interlaced one so you can actaully see the thing properly)
