i have a problem i was going to build me a shed out of wood and soundproof it,but the land i have my house on isn't mines. now i need to know if i bought an aliminum shed could i build the floating room on the inside to continue recording. thanx

i have a problem
No doubt. But it is not building related.

As to your question, a metal outer leaf of a two leaf assembly offers no mass. Your proposed floating room will be the interior leaf and no matter how much mass you sheith this leaf with, you will gain isolation if you build your shed with wood instead of metal.

fitZ the property i live on is only lease space i can't build out right so i have to cover up with the metal building

I don't understand?
Do you own the house?

How could you own the house, and not the land it sits on? Unless its like a townhouse or a detached condo or something.

:confused:

own home

yeah I own it its a modular home setup in a community thats why i have to use the aluminum or metal shed to build the walls inside.I really need help.

What size are we talking about, and why does it have to be metal? Is it so that it LOOKS portable? Steve

yes knightfly thats it your exactly right! I figure I would need a 12 x 12 since I'm lookin at the existing recording space being (booth 4ft wide 8 ft long and the engineering section will take up the rest of the space just enuff to record my indie label artists.

OK, first off those are all really bad room ratios and will make everything you record/listen to sound like crap -

Second, if you want this very sound "proof", you'll need to allow at least 1-1/2 to 2 feet more in EACH dimension of the building for soundproofing;

Third, you'll need to look at (and either get brochures on, or take pix of) the "candidates" you're interested in - specifically the floor frame, walls, door frame, etc - for this, you do NOT want an insulated building; that will only get in the way of soundproofing. You want a bare frame with metal skin, period.

Fourth, you will need to find something with taller ceilings if possible, and a VERY sturdy floor; either that, or you'll need to find something that the bottom floor frame can be reinforced - otherwise you'll find yourself and your gear breaking through the floor if you've done much toward getting good isolation.

I know there are people (including yourself) who are curious about what I have in mind; the simple answer is NOTHING (yet) - let's see what you find for "candidates" first. Besides, who doesn't like a good mystery? Speaking of which, what's your approximate budget before we get too far?

Hey, instead of doing this, why not get a good-sized "hi-cube" van, with the big engine (to pull all the extra weight) - then you can do "location" work as well. You're only using 8 x 12 spaces already, just make 'em end-to-end instead of side by side... Steve

thanks knightfly I'll take my camera along and take some pics. I may be able to still build it myself that will make me real happy. I have a friend who has over 20 yrs of building experience that I'm going to call up 2morrow and try to get it built at his place and sound proof it here. The property manager ays it has to be a manufactured building so I'll act as if it is and have it delivered in. I do plastering and stucco so I try to get hold of insulation and drywall from work to cut my cost. I really don't have a lot of cash right now since i just got the house and cars out of shop, so I do what I can , but my wife wants her kitchen counter back real soon!

If you decide to build (and deliver) here's more than a little info that may help;

Note that this won't give you TOTAL soundproofing (nothing will) but it will definitely beat the crap out of ANYTHING you can buy, if you follow my instructions.

Only thing you might wanna change is the size; other than that, you could actually build a steel trailer frame and move this around (with a wide load permit :=)) Steve
