Remember the Fine Young Cannibals? Well, whatever you thought of their music, you have to admit that there was one cool and PHATTass guitar sound at the beginning of "She Drives Me Crazy".

It has a swelling, almost brass like attack and a super thick, meaty distortion.

Anybody know how to get that sound - especially the attack?

Thanks,

I always thought that was a guitar synth sound. It sure sounds like one. Anyway, to replicate that sort of attack, you can use fairly heavy compression with a fast attack and slow release. Also, remember to put the distortion pedal before the compressor.

Ahh, the old twisting the eq knobs while he plays trick, ehh?? ;)

Thanks kb!

The guitar used on that song was a mid-sixties Fender Mustang, which was pink in color and had a red pick-guard.

How do I know?

I just saw a re-run last night of Saturday Night Live in which the Fine Young Cannibals were the musical guest and played that song live. ;)

Dang! How do you people FIND this stuff?

Interesting. I'm always amazed at the wack stuff that turns out to be responsible for the great sounds on hits.

As I always say, "the producer is the star."

Just read the article. There was some EQ tweaking but the attack is definately a volume swell. Either with a pedal or the guitar volume knob.

It's fun to play around with that. Hit some high squeels with distortion and swell the volume with some delay or reverb for "whales from outer space".
