Still Learning.......
Kinda copying the Strat vs. Tele thread, but there we go.

My vote is for the SG.

sg.... the 1978 standard variety by my preference.

although those old lp customs rock real hard too, just cost 4x as much. fuck.

SG!!!

I fell in love with the way they looked the first time I saw one (sometime in the 60's) and I became a true believer the first time I played one (also in the 60's).

hmmmm....

les paul......but i really dig th white custom SG with th 3 pickups but then again it has th nameplate above th front pickup that says Les Paul Custom ....so i guess i still like th LP better

I love them both! that is the older one's. My buddy has the fretless wonder (a 1974 sg custom) and it is wonderfull to play on. another friend has a 70's LP and I like it alot as well. I guess given the choice I would go for a nice LP. It is closer to what I'm used to playing on. Our guitarist SG being almost fretless is very nice but after playing my prs for several years I would have to play it for a while before I could become used to it. On the other hand I could pick up a nice Les Paul and go to town. It does seem easier to pull off big bends on the Les Paul do to the larger frets.

Hell I don't know!!! Choices, Choices...

SG

i played a les paul custom for a while and it was too heavy to be comfortable on stage for me.

with a SG you get the gibson sound without the les paul weight

...That's like asking a carpenter whether he prefers a saw or a hammer...

never thought of it that way but so true .....

I owned several great Les Pauls during the 70's and a couple of SG's. When I got back into music three years ago, I went with Fender Style guitars which was weird because I always heted them in the old days. LOL

Anyway, to the question at hand. I sold a Les Paul Standard after only having it for a few months last year. If I were to replace it with another Gibby, it would most likely be an SG. At 49, I'm getting too old for Lesters and prefer the light weight of the SG.

re:sg vs les paul

I've got an old studio les paul (15yrs old!), nice setup.
Nice thick creamy sound without the binding going thru a JMP1 + pwr amp into a 4x12, yummy. Almost a LP standard without the finish, just the way I like it!!!!!

I have a LP junior lite, it looks kind've like a halfway between them both even though its a LP.

I have the same LP jr. lite, and I bought it because it seemed like a good compromise between the SG and LP.

I'd still like a goldtop though.

I like my SG a lot but it does have one drawback. It's pretty top (neck) heavy and tends to move while I'm playing it. Never had that problem with a big-bottom LP or even the lightweight strats I've played.
