Setup questions..all help appreciated

I am comfortable with computer hardware, settings and preferences but new to recording. I've got a problem that has me stumped.

Here's the set up: Win XP, 512 kb ram, plenty of HD space. Integrated sound
as well as MadDog 4.1 soound card.

I have recorded some guitar tracks using a basic mic in front of my amp.
It worked great into Win Sound Recorder and Kristal Sound Engine.

Here's the problem....Line in seems dead.

What I would like to do is run direct from my Yamaha DG-Stomp preamp/amp modeler into the line in, but I get no signal. I do get a weak signal going from headphone out to line in but the volume is so low as to be unusable, even with all sliders wide open.
Same thing on both the integrated sound and aftermarket card.

I also tried running from the line out on my guitar amp to line in. No worky either

I have line in selected in Windows recording preferences and anywhere else I found it, but still no go.

Any ideas? Thanks

I guess that is what I am not understanding. the DG-Stomp is intended as a preamp for live performance or direct recording. It has regular stereo or mono outs, coax out and midi.
I've read about others using it in this application with great results and am curious why I can't
