I am buying a mac this week to set up my first protools studio. I've never really done computer based recording but I have a few questions about setting it up as I know less about macs than I do about recording. The Mac I am going to get is a mid/late 2010 model iMac 3.06ghz 4gb ram (max 16gb) 20" monitor 1 firewire port 4 usbs and a mini display port. I also bought already an alesis io26 as an interface. Couple of questions. First of all what are the limitations with the mini display port to hooking up to another monitor? Can I use ANY monitor? Does it have to be an apple monitor? Is it BETTER if its apple? I looked at a 20" apple cinema display as it has two firewire ports on it. I thought that might work for my next issue which is that I need an external hard drive as protools states you should not record to the same hard drive you have your OS on but the problem is I only have one firewire port on these macs. I also need a firewire connection for the alesis. What am I supposed to do about that? What are my options? Would the 20" apple cinema monitor help with that? Also in the future I would like to add a large screen LCD as a third monitor for another area so I can have access from another area. How would I go about setting up for the third monitor? It can show the same information as from one of the other two. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
