Setting up aux sends for hardware

GO PACKERS!
How do you set up the combination of Sonar and a Delta sound card to use a rackmount FX unit in a aux send capacity?
Also is it possible to route an effect as an insert effect so that you can monitor the effect but not record it?

The way I do this is as follows:

I connect the input signal (the mic, pod, etc.) into channel one of my mixer. Then I connect the direct out for that channel to the sound card's #1 input.

Next I set up sonar so that the track I am recording shows Delta #1 left as the input and Delta 1/2 as the output. Then I run a cable from the Delta 1 output to an unused channel on my mixer (say, channel 9). I put the effect on channel 9, but not on channel 1. I also remove channel 1 from the mix.

What happens is I don't hear channel 1, but I do record it. And I hear channel 9 (with the effects), but I don't record that. So I get a dry recording, but what I hear is wet.

Did any of this make sense????

Yeah baby!
It makes sense now.
I just bought a 1010 and want to utilise my extra in outs to use some of my hardware effects.
I'm somewhat infatuated with my sansamp classic and was thinking I could keep it permanately cabled in for "reamping".
This could do the same thing as Revalver but sound better and save cpu's.

Now if someone could explain aux sends setups with a rackmount unit.....

I sometimes feed my audio track outputs to my rackmount outboard gear (comp, multi-effects), then record that output.
Is that what you are talking about?

It's pretty simple, all you have to do is assign the bus and ch's in Sonar (both Aux out and main bus out) so the Aux ch (and only that Aux ch) comes out on a particular Delta chs, then connect that to an outboard gear. Then you record the outboard gear output. I split the output of the outobard via patchbay. One goes to recording input of my Delta, and the other to a mixer so I can hear the outboard in a mix.

Now the hard part is, because of the AD/DA latency, your recorded outboard gear track will be offset by a few mS. This is usually enough to cause combing effect that sounds like a phaser. You usually have to line these up later.

Now, this is more of a hassle than just using a plugin, or recording through the outboard gear. Just so it's clear, I do use plugins, and I try to record the tone I want to begin with.

But then, none of the plugins sound anywhere close to my Lexicon or 1176. Or acidrock's Sansamps for that matter. And sometimes you want to do things to an already recorded track, or something like a SoftSynth generated track.

More ways to be creative is cool.

Dammit, Acidrock. I thought you've read this hundreds of times!

I know I've posted this link many times...

THANKS!
