Hi,
I'd like to ask people if they had about $5,000 to $7,000 and wanted to set up a smipro to pro like studio what would they get.
What kind of putter A Mac G4 or a PC with pluming? Mixer, mics. (I will be using Digi 001 with ProTools) etc.
Discribe to me your dream studio and why you choose what. I will be setting one up here and I want the best bang for the buck. I'd rather go quality then cheepo.

Thanks!

In the 5000-7000 range I'd purchase all the gear used and save money...

I'd get a Mackie 32x8 for $2000
An alesis HD24 for $1500
A used snake for $200
A used mic in the 150-250 range
An Alesis RA250 for $250
Pr of Event 20/20's for about $250

And whatever is left I'd use for acoustical treatments.

Although I chose the route that is similar to what Frederic described, if you are going to be using a Digi-001 this is probably what I'd do.

Mixer - Soundcraft M12;
Monitors - Event TR8 (powered);
Computer - 2.5+ GHz P4 w/ 1 Gb RAM, 2 hard drives (one for software, the other for audio data storage), CDRW/DVD-RW drives, Echo MIA or M-Audio Audiophile soundcard (make sure you visit the Digidesign website to see what computers and cards are compatible with ProTools LE);
Cables to match your inputs and outputs;
Microphones - a couple of SM57's, a Studio Projects B1, a couple of Marshall MXL603's, and maybe an AT4040 or similar mid-range large diameter condenser;
Microphone stands and cables;
AND spend time thinking about the room you will record in and mix in and apply suitable acoustic treatments.

Except I avoided computers entirely :)

Why reboot if you don't have to? :D

Thanks

Much thanks to you who have responded. This gives me some idea where to head in setting up my studio.
Once it is up and running I'll do a post with some pix to show the progress.

Blessings! cantanz

If you are on a budget, definately go with the PC. In my opinion, it depends on what you are planning to record. What kind of recordings are you planning on doing?
