First, I want to thank everyone for all their help. So far, the very loose/ rough performances I've recorded on the A2 sound better than anything I've previously done digitally.
Can I ask about setting levels? I have my preamp output going into the A2, which has an input and output level control knob. Am I correct in guessing that when the knobs are at 12 o'clock that's akin to line level. Or would having both knobs cranked be more akin to line level? (I.E. everything that goes in the machine comes out)?
I'm recording off a low output ribbon mic, so the last few times I've cranked the input knob on the A2 and things still sounded good/i.e. not too noisy. (I seem to metering in a good place too--i.e. mostly black with a little red). When transfering the tracks to CD I have the output knob at 12 o'clock. I've experimented a little with cranking it some, but that does seem to let in an unacceptable amount of noise. (Time to buy a mixer I guess; I have my eye on the Soundcraft Spirit M4). On my last recording I just upped the master volume digitally on my Alesis Masterlink (the one piece of digital gear all you analog geeks should really look into).
Thanks for your feedback.
