i have a BOSS GT PRO guitar multi effect and i have a tube preamplifier --- in order to record sessions in direct recording...which one of these comes first?

Usually, the effects come before the preamp, but it really depends on what kind of effects you are running and what you want to do with the preamp. Do you plan on adding distortion with the preamp? Then run the preamp before the effects, especially if you're mainly using modulation/echo effects, or reverb on the GT PRO. If you just plan on using the preamp to boost your signal and eq it a little, then run the effects first.

Either way, you should definitely try to get a hold of a nice amp and microphone. The recording quality will be a bazillion times better than if you just run direct. Even if you just throw a small tube amp and a sm57 on it, the sound quality will be FAR superior. And it won't break the bank :)

Yeah, what coolwhip said about the amp and mic. Actually, a small tube amp would be best for that, since generally effects (not modellers, just effects) are designed to work with tube amps. Go out and get yourself an Epiphone Valve Jr. and if you really care, replace the tubes and the speaker, it makes the tone much richer.
About order: probably the Boss before the preamp, but if you end up introducing more into your chain you can screw with it. Some of the most innovative sounds (see: Hendrix) come from putting things in strange orders, like fuzzing a wah, etc.
Just my two cents.

Solid advice. Never stop messing around with the order of your pedals - you can come up with some really creative stuff when you stir things up a bit by shifting pedals around. It all comes down to what sound you like, not what the 'right' order for the pedals is supposed to be.

true story - i heard good ol' mozart say it himself.
