Sequencing with Cubase VST & recording audio with Protools. All suggestions welcome

OK, I'll admit, I like my Cubase VST for sequencing MIDI, but recording audio gets buggy sometimes, like locking up on playback, ect, ect.

As far as a midi sequencer, IMHO, nothing comes close (and I know alot of professional minded people agree).

I have built a dedicated computer for Protools. 1.7 GHZ Duron w/1 GB of RAM. 40 GB HD.

Since Protools doesnt have a great sequencer, plus I dont want to learn a new sequencer, and I have hundreds of songs already done on Cubase for myself and clients, I would like to continue to use my Cubase computer as a sequencer, and sync that computer to the Protools computer for audio.

Is this possible? If so, how would the 2 computers be hooked up?

I dont have the Protools yet, but I'm still deciding on the 001 or 002.

An opinion on the 001 and 002 would be appreciated also.

cheers

Well, Pro Tools LE 6.1 and Cubase SX both support Rewire... that would be the most logical way to go. Why did you build a Duron and not an Athlon?

My fault, it is a Athalon.

Rewire? I've never used it.

I just want to sync one computer with Cubase VST with another computer with Protools.

1. What kind of psysical connections?

2. Can be this be done by MIDI?

3. would I set up Protools as a master clock and cubase a slave?
or Cubase a master and Protools a slave?

4. Press start on Cubase and protools starts rolling (playing)???

Please help

an alternative

as an alternative if you have the time you might want to try the demo of powertracks at pgmusic.com . the midi sequencer is
exceptionally fully featured and good plus lets you record 48 digital audio tracks.
powertracks has a huge following of fans. check on their
web site forum for user comments. it is a bargain at 29 dollars.
even if you decide to stick with your current approach it still might be worth trying the demo as a back up plan to see how well
it performs on your own system.
it also records in 24 bit now up to 96khz.

2 things:

1) Rewire won't work, unfortunately. Neither Cubase nor Pro Tools will allow itslef to slave- they are both Master only.

2) Pro Tools will happily import the MIDI files exported from Cubase projects. I'd suggest doing the majority of your MIDI sequencing in Cubase, then exporting it to Pro Tools and recording your audio.

And finally... (I know, I said only 2 things)

3) Get to know the sequencer in Pro Tools. Its not that hard to learn and you'll need to know the basics to get around anyway. The Pro Tools sequencing features are substantially better than they were in the past, so give them a chance- at least enough to make tweaking your Cubase exports a less frustrating endeavor.

Take care,
Chris

P.S. There may be ways to sync the programs via MIDI trigger from Pro Tools to Cubase. I'm not sure how to set that up and not sure it will work with both programs on the same machine.

yeh - 29 bucks !!!!!! dont be fooled into thinking powertracks is
a "kiddies" pkge. This is a PRO PRO pkge. if you dont believe me.
check it out and be amazed. also try band in the box at the same time. very usefull songwriting tool.
also check out the deep guitar and other effects in powertracks.
their 50's "guitar trails" type fx setting and about 50 others are really neat and produce sounds i cant get in any other sequencer. powertracks includes all sorts of midi notation
editing tools and the digital audio side all sorts of editing and effects transforms. my challenge to you sir. you find me a better value on the market today !!!!! JUST TRY IT !!!!
i have nothing to do with the company in any way.
I too was sceptical till i tried it. it also has a usefull tool built in that tells you how many tracks you can run.

Ahh, syncing two different computers. That's different. You need a MIDI interface for each computer (the 001 has one, and the 002 might as well). Then you can sync the two computers using MTC (MIDI Time Code). I've done it with Macs, but it's different with PCs. You can also sync the two apps on the same system using a virtual MIDI cable, like Hubi's Loopback Device. In that case, you'd need two separate soundcards.

In any case, I could tell you more details of how to set it up, but since you don't have anything yet, it would be a waste of time. Rest assured, you can do it, and it's not all that difficult.

I appreciate the feedback.

1. I believe protools LE 6.1 is out. Is that correct?

2. How much different is the Protools sequencer different from the Cubase one?

I'll be honest, I've never used Protools, and dont know spit about it except what I read on the net. I try to research the hell out of something before I buy like most people. One of the big things holding me back from buying Protools is that, I keep reading where their stuff is proprietary. Protools software, Protools (sigidesign) audio card.

Is this the same thing with MIDI? What I mean is, I dont see Digidesign making a 8 in 8 out midi box like my Unitor-8....unless I'm blind I havent seen one or found one. If there is let me know.

I see the Digi001 looks like it has a 1 in 1 out midi interface. That isn't nearly enough midi ins and outs for me. i'm actually about to buy another Unitor-8 because i need the inputs.

Will I be able to use a Emagic Unitor-8 MIDI interface with Protools? If so, I'm definately sold on Protools.

Yes.

Pretty different. I don't use Cubase for MIDI, but I know it has deeper MIDI support. If you are mostly using MIDI just to sequence with a piano roll, Pro Tools can handle it, but it doesn't do scores.

Yes. Pro Tools on Windows works with all windows standard MIDI devices. Pro Tools on Mac works with either OMS (Mac OS9) or OS X MIDI (Mac OS X).
