I would like to play my drums to a sequencer. I want to download songs from the internet and load them into the sequencer. I plan on buying something like a Proteus for a sound source. As far as the sequencer is concerned, do I need a computer and what software is good? Or is there a stand-alone unit that would work. I would prefer a stand-alone unit if it makes sense. I know very little about this subject and would appreciate any info that can be provided. Thank you.

You can get a keyboard or module with the sequencer built in. Stand alone sequencers are easier to setup sometimes and more flexible for live use but in the long run a software sequencer will give you a lot more for the money.

I would recomend using Sonar. It will handle midi and audio and is easier to learn than most programs. You will be able to visually edit the sequences and be able to fine tune the midi data. Computer sequencers are sometimes even easier to learn because everthing is graphicaly layed out and you dont have to fumble through a 4inch LCD display.

and . . .

if you purchase an older used-keyboard, you may not even have THAT large of a screen size to work with. (early korg versions) i would definitely echo 'texroadkill'...a software sequencer will give you far more flexibility in the long AND short run, if you can swing the price of one. some software manufacturers offer free versions of their high-end software (digidesign - protools) too. it's a great way to get your feet wet with DAWs. i would really concentrate on finding a board that has great sounds or at least, ones you can be happy with. ;)
