Sequencer in a box

Hi all,

I'm thinking about expanding my studio with a sequencer of some kind. Now, I'm a guitarist/bassist/singer by trade but I'm pretty good with gadgets and new technology. I'm looking for something to make loops and beats and whole songs so that if necessary I could use it live.

My only experience so far has been with a Yamaha RM1X which I borrowed off a friend - it was a helluva lot of fun! I had written 3 whole pieces in about 2 hours it was so intuitive.

But - I was wondering if there was anything "better" out there - I've been looking at the MC505 and Grooveboxes but it's all a bit bewildering.

I don't mind if it's old gear, and I don't want to spend a fortune on the latest and greatest, but I would like something that's pretty flexible and sounds good!

I'd appreciate any help!

You just want a sequencer?

I could recommend my favorite portable sequencer, but I'm not sure that's what you are really looking for.

Ideally I want it all to be in one box, or at most a couple of very compatible boxes like the Electribe series. I don't have a decent synth, or a sampler, so if it was all in one place that would be ideal.

You'll probably find the MC-505 much more difficult to use than the RM1X.

My recommendation would be to buy a RM1X and it's companion the SU700 which is a unique and easy-to-use sampler. You could probably get both for around $500 and if you've already used and liked the RM1X there's --- IMHO --- not much reason to look further.

Thanks for your response - much appreciated!

I've bought a perfect-condition MC505, boxed with all leads and manuals, from the SOS classifieds for £175. I figured at that price if it doesn't suit my needs I can probably sell it on eBay for twice that and get the RM1x instead. I didn't know about that sampler mind you - if I get on with the whole sequencer idea I suppose a sampler will have to be my next purchase.

To save another thread, can anyone recommend a good (if not necessarily expensive) sampler that's known to be compatible with the MC505?

Thanks again!
