I love these mics. I prefer them on my snare to a SM 57 and they are also great on rack toms. I really think they would be mediocre at best on your kick drum. Certainly not a choice I'd consider, cause that's not the range they are made for.
Well, they're good mics and they will tolerate the spl's from the kick drum and they will give you a good signal, but it won't be the full fat sound that you'd want from a kick drum. It would be like using an SM 57 or 58 on kick. A lot of folks do that, but I've never liked the result. I don't know the Samson mics (I've always avoided them because of the bad press), but if it is designed as a kick mic, it may be better in that area than trying to use an instrument mic that is designed to pick up the higher end (like the e604).
I own 3 of the e604's and I love them. I use them on stage for hand drums and on my kit for my snare and the rack toms. I still prefer the ATM 25 as my kick mic. These aren't terribly expensive and they are real troopers.
Thanks I'm should be getting my e604's in a few days. Do you play rock if u do how do they sound? The samson is ok for a kick but what should I later invest in maybe
I really prefer the e604's on snare. Not because they sound better than an SM 57 (I find they are very similar, at least mine are). I prefer them because they are small enough to keep out of the way and easier to position. They are also light enough that I can use them as a clip on for some of my hand drums. This is a good item.
All that being said, I still hang onto and use my SM 57's too.
