so i just went to my local guitar center and picked up a plug thats a 1/4 stereo phone plug to 2 rca plugs and my question is,

on my amp, there is the input for aux, tape, or phono, which should i use to plug into my fostex vf80? i havent gotten my fostex vf80 yet, but id like to know in advance, so please help...

also on the red and grey rca plugs, it says tip on the grey, and ring on the red, what does that mean? thanks a lot i really need help.

It is a good idea to wait til you get your Fostex and then figure out what you need. It sounds like you plan on monitoring your recorder through your home stereo. If that's all you have, then it will have to do. You could use the headphone out jack on the Fostex and plug the rca's into the aux jacks on your stereo.

Ideally, it would be nice to have a seperate amp and monitors to listen to playback. The Fostex has 1/4 inch outs which would work well with any standard monitor amplifier.

yes yes, im working on the monitors trust me. the fostex has a left and right 1/4 output, so should i buy an adapter that has 2 1/4s that go into one?

No, if you want to use the 1/4 inch jacks, buy two 1/4 inch to rca cables. One for left and right, and plug them into the left and right rca jacks on the aux part of your stereo.

It means that the grey RCA end is connected to the Tip of the 1/4" plug and the red RCA is connected to the little ring of the 1/4".
It's really an insert cable but can be a stereo splitter.
Grey would be left and Red would be right.
However, I wouldn't recommend using a headphone output to drive a line level input. I would just use the stereo L/R outputs.

Take that cable back and get two 1/4" TS to RCA male cables like these.
Or, if you already have some RCA patch cables (like for hooking up a tape deck to the stereo), get two of these.

that seems a lot more like the ticket, ill for sure take it back and get two of those, thanks a lot!
