Sell my GT-6 ... and get a PODxt???

I bought a GT-6 a few months ago and while it has a few good sounds, it seems to have so much that I don't need (silly effects, tons of amp modelling, etc).

My end goal is to record into my Mac G4. My options:

> Keep the GT-6 and record right from it.

> Sell the GT-6 and buy a new PODxt and record from it.

> Record from a rack unit like a G-Major, M-One, or MPX200. How does this sound? Do I go through my amp too?

> Mic my Fender Hot Rod Deluxe amp (the room I'm in sucks).

Help. I'm confused.

POD!

get the POD. It is much more indepth in reguard to tone shapingcontrols. The old Pods are nothing like the XT. It truly is amazing.

I used to have a Boss GT-3 and all of the sounds were WAY overprocessed. I didnt really pay it too much mind until people started to complain that my guitar trax were not authentic sounding. I dumped that thing on ebay and picked up the POD XT and I am much happier with it. It is a MUCH more organic sounding unit. And for all of the features that it gives you...you would have to rob a bank to afford all of this stuff separately.

The Fender Hot Rod Deluxe is a pretty damn good-sounding amp. I say mic it. The room doesn't matter at all if you are just close micing it -- you would only bother putting up a room mic to capture the room ambience, so if the room sucks, just don't -- add ambience with reverb, if you need it, when you mix.

No sense spending money on the POD XT unless (1) you can't really crank the Deluxe to get the sound you want because of the neighbors, etc., (2) you want to be able to get many different amp colors and you can only get a couple from the Deluxe, (3) you want the no-muss, no-fuss convenience of not having to run a mic and place it and all that, and this is more important than printing the best possible guitar sound, and so are willing to live with the modeled tone from the POD. (I mean, you can have a great amp but if you don't mic it right it can sound bad, whereas with the POD it's pretty much a no-brainer to get a really decent sound.)

That said, I have a real nice old Fender Deluxe Reverb ('64 or '65 blackface) and I never bother miking it up. If and when I ever get a real recording project off the ground I'll do that, but for demos and composing, it is just so damn simple and convenient to work with the POD (I have the POD 2.x), and by cracky, it sounds pretty damn good in the bargain. (I hear the XT blows the earlier model away, so when I get gainfully employed again I'll just have to pop for one...)

Thanks folks-----keep 'em coming. I have been eyeing both of these and reading everything I can on these 2 units cause I'm about to take the plunge on one! (Can't believe how good my timing is lately!)

The PodXT has the edge over the Boss GT-6 and the Digitech Genesis-3 (the desk unit WITHOUT the recording capability), correct?

I have some pod xt sound samples up at www.astrondelta.com/charger/podxt . They get better as you get down to the bottom of the page, since I posted them in the order I made them, and I am always getting better at figuring out the xt. The cool thing about the xt it is you can record straight into your G4 over a USB connection, you dont; need a special sound card or anything.

However, the Hot Rod Deluxe, if you can turn it up, that's a nice sounding amp in its own right. The reason I push amp modellers is that I do the vast majority of my guitar recording after about 9:00 PM, and I live in a house, and I have neighbors. If I could get away with it, I would mike up an amp for probably 90% of what I do.

Well, you guys have made a good case for the Podxt. I'm gonna try one out at GC.

I too live in a house with neighbors nearby ... so crankin' the hot rod is not really an option. And recording through an amp modeller will probably be best for my marriage too!

Hey ... what about the rack units I mentioned in the original post? Do they have amp modelling capabilities or are they simply effects?

i just picked up my PODxt today in the store and WOW! this is my first amp modeler but it sure is nice...i've been messing with it all day... Try dual rect + auto wah + phaser haha funny =))

this thing definetly comes in handy although the big muff emulation seems way off or is it just me? it sounds nothing like my big muff ...hm..
