i'm looking for a good condenser mic to record vocals and acoustic guitar, and have been offered a second hand akg c1000s.

it's older than the model currently available - it's got a black finish, doesn't have the 'triple-cardioid' logo on it, and says 'austria' on the front as well.

i've tried it out, and it does sound fuller and better than the cheap crappy dynamic i've been using to date (qu'elle surprise!) but as i've never used a new c1000s before, i've nothing to compare it with, to decide if it's in full working order. (i have also never used any condenser mic before, ever).

any comments on the dangers and/or benefits of buying a mic (particularly a condenser) second hand? also, does anyone know of the reputation of this particular (older) model?

p.s. - the asking price is £40 sterling - about $65, and it includes the polar pattern converter, windshield and stand adaptor.

p.p.s. - i am unconcerned about the 'hygiene' aspect, think what you will of me for that...

That's a good deal, if you like the mic that is.
For that money you can take it home and check it against what you have now. If you don't like it just ebay the sucker on down the line.

Hell, if you don't like it I'll buy it from ya.

I doubt it's broken in some subtle way. At the worst the diaphram is kinda built up with dust and smoke and has lost a bit of sparkle.

But what the hell do I know?

Isn't that a good thing with the C1000?

Or is the black one the legendary nicer version?

Yeah, I guess they are a bit bright. I don't know the difference between the versions but it's a very useful mic for $65.

IMO, the AKG C1000S is NOT a good mic for acoustic guitar or vocals... but it can work pretty good on tom-toms and $65 is a good price.
