Got it, generally happy with it, but yeah - N-o-i-s-y freakin' thing... Wasn't really expecting that. Within specs, though. Just not used to that kind of audible noise from a unit.

I haven't had much "goofing" time with it yet, but I was expecting to see if there were any good mods to shut it up a little. Did Jim's mods quiet it down much?
 
Wow, noise has never been an issue with mine, and I have used it in situations where I've been very picky and listened closely in several different environments and headphones. Maybe yours needs some caps replaced or something.

Thinking back, I did get the mods done almost immediately after buying the 320A (used). The mods were part of the plan when I bought it. So I really don't have any memory of how it sounded before Jim worked on it. I'm still surprised that you are hearing audible noise like that though.

If you are planning to use the Compellor in your mastering studio, I think you should give Jim a call and talk to him about what the upgrade will do for you. He really knows this stuff well and I'm pretty sure you'll want your Compellor upgraded if you plan to keep it.

I shouldn't make it sound so evil... I should've said "noisier than anything else here" instead. It's around -80 or 84dBfs or so - Well within specs. It's just when it's pretty cranked in here is it noticed. But just the fact that it's noticed even at ear-splitting volume... I don't like it. I e-mailed AU right after I posted (thanks for lighting a fire under me).

Jim's more of a telephone guy, just so you know.

If that is indeed the original seller who is now no longer a registered user, then definitely stay away. Perhaps a new scam is to join eBay, put up a quick auction, and then quit eBay. The same may hold true for PayPal.

I think the weakness of eBay right now is that they really don't have a way of effectively eliminating the scammers.

If you think this is bad, try selling a high priced item. That's when the scammers really come out of the woodwork. About a year ago I sold my Manley VariMu, and it a took a couple tries to do it. But during and after both auctions I had scammers emailing my bidders claiming to be my business partner and offering to sell the VariMu to them for a set (low) price. I was alerted to this by a couple bidders asking me if the offer was legit.

Calling scum like that "scammers" is really understating what they are doing. What they are doing is out and out fraud. Not only is it bad in it's own right, but it also scares away bidders from the auction, so the items for sale may not sell for as much as they should. eBay really does not have a grip on this.
 
Interesting observation. Seems Ebay kinda created the entire problem with the second-chance option.
 
The second chance offer is a great thing, but scammers can ruin the eBay auction experience for everyone.
