been given a "second chance" on ebay for a 002r i bid on. i remember seeing a thread on here a few days ago about a scam. seems legit. links take me to ebay, i can access "my ebay" and such. the seller has no feedback though. would it be unkind to ask him to send me the item first, given i have all positive feedback? dont wanna get screwed....

Did you follow an email link and then log in your information? You'd better contact the seller to make sure this is legit...it sounds fishy to me.

Possibly a scam

But it's hard to tell. I would probably just let it go.

Since he also has no rating I would definitely make sure he gives you a phone number and call him a few times. Email him a few times. Make sure that he seems legit. If he seems pushy about the sale, or just doesn't sound like an honest guy, break it off. I would say skip it anyways but that's just me. I typically only bid if they have very positive feedback, and they are selling typical items. If this is his first sale you have no clue about this guy. So to avoid the headache, I would say forget it and keep looking.

If the message also went to your inbox in "My EBay", then it was sent through their system. As far as the guy sending you the item before the payment goes... there's no way that will happen... especially if he's a newbie. I bought a high end item from a seller before who had no feedback and it was fine, I got a landline phone number to call and talk to him first (make sure he knows the ins and outs of the gear in question) and confirmed his name and address via the local operator. If you pay, make sure you either use PayPal or a bankers draught as both of them are insured and trackable.

buyer beware.......

.......and play at your own risk.

i would run, run, run as fast as i could from any unsolicited "second chance" offers i was given on ebay.

but that's me. :D

cheers,
wade

...Also, check out the community pages on E-bay. There is alot of knowledge on the discussion boards, and the posters there give quick excellent advice.

i sent a message to the seller, just to make sure. the email address it came from is secondchanceoffer@ebay.com

Are you sure? Sometimes a scam e-mail will contain a legitimate looking address that consists of a hyperlink to an illegitimate site.

I've never received a second chance offer that wasn't a scam.

I'd say that you'd better be very very, very, very cautious.

Second chance offers can be totally legit. It happens when the original winner of the auction backs out for one reason or another. Then the seller can offer the item to the next highest bidder, hoping to sell the item for a few dollars less without having to relist it. Relisting costs extra money, while a second chance offer does not. I've given potential buyers second chance offers on my auctions, and I've been given (and have taken) legit second offers as well.

The key is that the second chance offer has to come through the mail system on eBay. On your "My eBay" page you'll see a link on the left that says "My Messages". The offer has to appear there for it to be legit.

If you get an email that does not appear on your "My eBay" messages page, it is not legit. No matter how real the email may look, avoid it unless it comes through eBay's messaging system.

However, as I said, if the message *does* appear on your "My eBay" page and has come through eBay's system, then it is real. If they want to settle the second chance outside of eBay, or have you email another address outside of eBay, avoid those.

But this idea that *any* second chance offer is not legit is incorrect, there certainly are legit second chance offers.

That said, I personally would avoid any auction by a first time seller, and a second chance offer from a first time seller. It has less to do with second chance offers than wanting to buy from someone with a proven track record.

your first thought is the right one. you read about the scam before this second chance. I would take that as a dont do it man. scammers are getting very crafty it scares me. For me I dont take sales pitches I didnt ask for.

what I want to know is

who, that would be legitimatley giving someone a second chance, being a first-time seller, would have an email address called 'secondchanceoffer' ? Does that sound like someone who just happened to have something to sell one time and the winning bidder backed out? Also, you'd better go to ebay through your normal channel, making sure that the URL is really pointing you to the right place (and you havent been redirected to something that just looks convincing) and check out your id activity. If you followed their link, you may have already been victimized. I hope not.

Good luck & keep us posted.

Just got an Aphex 320A last week on a SCO...

I scored a Lexicon Alex a few weeks back in a SCO form a new member with zero feedback for 30 quid....50 bucks? I emailed him back and asked for a phone number, called him up and done the deal.

Just use your common sense and always use paypal if you can

ok, i logged in directly to my ebay account, the same offer was there under my account. i will probably go for it, but only if he is willing to send me the gear first... ;)

that will be tough. most people want money first to make sure you dont end up not paying for it. its your call.

Just be sure to use Paypal so you can cancel and still get money back.

I highly doubt the seller will agree to sending you the gear first, and as a seller I would never do that. If you are not confident enough in the seller to send them the money first, then you should just skip the auction. There will be plenty more auctions for 002r's I'm quite sure!

Massive Master,

Have you gotten the 320A yet, and if so how do you like it? I bought one a couple years ago and am glad I have it. I had mine upgraded by Jim Williams at Audio Upgrades--totally worth it in my opinion. It's even cleaner and a bit sweeter sounding now.

I've offered and bought SCOs... just be careful and follow the advice above and you should be all set...

Did you know that the word Caution is translated in many other languages as Advertisment??

Oh... on the ebay subject... I've managed some pretty sweet deals by emailing the seller of a closed auction, where the reserve was not met, with a low-ball bid.
