After doing some research on the net I finally purchased a SE Electronics 2200A Condenser mic.

I have'nt yet tried it but hear its got a great sound for the price and solidly built plus it won a readers award in 2003.

Anyone familier with these mics?

dave

Yeah its a fab mic you will enjoy it. About the best of that price bracket.

It amongst a handful of mics in that price bracket that are a little bit better than the rest. The ADK Vienna/Hamburg and Studio Projects C1 would both find themselves in my locker before that SE, but that's because I own the SE2200 first version. I'd want to try a Red5 RV8 too.

Truth is, as long as you don't buy a turkey (anything with Samson written on it for a start), they are much of a muchness at this price point, and other factors are going to have a bigger influence. If this is your first condenser, you will be very happy indeed. :)

Hi Noisedude

I did have an ADK but it was'nt a Humbug just a straight A-51 and was'nt so happy with the overall sound, plus there was no switches or HPL filters in it.

Thanks all for the info guys.

I was going to by a behringer B1 but I'm so glad | did'nt after hearing the horror stories of the behringer repair service which if anything goes wrong , you might have to wait 6 months to get it back.

Plus the SE Electronics 2200A will have an overall better sound , more crisper I hear, I can't wait, i would try it now but I'll upset the neighbours.LOL

You'd have trouble upsetting them here ... I want badly to go to bed but three of my flatmates have different metal CDs on loudly in the surrounding rooms. Having lived pretty much on my own for a couple of years, this is a real culture shock. :(

I treid this mic out for the first time this evening and wow! what a difference it made then my ADK-A51.

The SE Electronics 2200A came with a great large metal sturdy shockmont which you scew the mic on too.

The sound quality I thought was incredible for the price, I paid £139.00 .

Its great on bass, mid-range and highs and I can see why it won awards.

Someone mentioned that the SE's are the SM58's of condenser mics, for the price I think yep that sounds right to me.

I heard the SE mics are a bunch of rebadged Chinese junk ... no better than the Behringers, MXL's, or anything else.

...SE actually broke away from Feilo and started manufacturing their own designs as well as their own capsules...they are not re-badged OEM mics although a few of the models share design similarities...the SE2200A is very similar to the MXL V67 as far as the circuit design, but SE uses higher-grade Japanese/Panasonic components and their own hand made capsules...the 2200A also has high-pass and pad switches unlike the V67...they do sound somewhat similar...the craftsmanship of the SE mics is clearly a notch up from the OEM Chinese mics...they also build OEM mics for other companies such as Cascade Microphones...the SE Gemini Tube mic, a very unique design utilizing 2 tubes, has received high praise in pro-audio trade reviews...
...I have the 2200A and the Cascade V55 Valve Microphone (built by SE)...both mics are real sweet...I would liken their products to the earlier Rode mics (modified/upgraded Chinese OEM product) that helped establish Rode as a major player in the industry...
...here's a link to the history of the company:

...and a review of the 2200A:

Thanks for those excelent links Kidvybes.

Its intereseting to hear the backround of how these mics are made , I can't get over the way the mics picks up expressive vocals and makes it cut thru' the mix nicely.

It's not rebadged, and thus far doesn't appear to be junk (junk is in the eye of the beholder!). That SE3 mic of theirs is absolutely stunning on snare drum...I threw my 57 out of a window. :D

Their new ribbon mic won't be cheap ($850?) but it is promising (I've heard it but only at the AES show and it actually had some nice high end to it).

I dunno Chess, have you heard them?

The earlier stuff is rebadged, not junk, but definitely OEM. If you went to FEILO's website you could spy their entire range with different names.

My SE2200 first edition was really good for the money, but I have one too many LDCs at the moment, and because it came in a tidy little flight case with shockmount, I'm selling it.

Paul White liked the SE3A, I think, and was slightly less keen on the cheaper SDCs, if I remember rightly.

Actually, that is a spot on assessment. I do however really like the omni caps as they are sort of huge and "exciting" sounding if that makes any sense.

As long as you don't call it 'warm' or 'better than a U87', you can say whatever you like. :)
