I love the Shure mics...they take a beating somehow and I need that around here. A real nice ribbon mic just wouldn't survive this place.
the SM7 seems to take some good abuse, i never worry about it. there's been screaming in it and it seems to not mind...but it is not a cheap mic and not treated as one.
the sm57 an 58.. well made...frkn workhorse. probably 58 for scremo...the 57 is a bit more directional, but it'd work with some singer diligence on positioning..
the 58 is probably a great choice.
I would think a SM58 would work though, there's somewhat of a similar sound to the SM7, with a little comp and eq you can get it really close I'll bet.
even cheaper yet is the PG58, I have a few...it pissed me off the kids with sideburns...bent up the screens by banging them to their heads.. but they still work. I don't get it, I never beat up my equipment...but I understand Hendrix, Townsend and others banged up stuff for some reason?
and you could have 3qty 58's for the price of one SM7...
I read Corey Taylor uses one in Slipknot (Platinum selling band (with screaming or is it called "eating the mic"?)..
their CD my son bought was really, really recorded well..even with the screaming it was most excellent and a surprise how they can mix screaming in and it sounds clean?
