Ive only ever used a cheap mic for screaming and in my opinion screaming doesnt sound very good when its not done into a mic. Will an expensive mic make the scream sound more representitive of what my scream sounds like when not done into a microphone at all?

from experience i think the sm58 is the best choice. People who scream tend to like to hold the mic in their hands - so imo a large diaphragm condenser is not a good choice. I have recorded screaming with my mxl990 with good results, but like i said the vocalist really wanted to hold it!

i know the singer (screamer) from Unearth used a SM58 on the latest album to record vocals. it's on the video. give it a shot, or if you have more money try a SM7.

...

I usually use a Sennheiser e609 or an Audix I5 for screamers.

on the same note, would different mics be different for people who scream differently? such as the low-end cannibal corpse stuff and the really high pitched stuff you hear in a lot of metalcore and grindcore anymore?

I use a shure beta mic and a fair ammount of compression. Just about everything I record is along these lines. screamers like to hold the mic. Just make sure they dont cup it cause it'll sound like crap

I use an SM58 screaming both normal/mid-ranged screams and my black metal screams, but I'm thinking about using my bass drum mic for the death-grunts next time I record

it'll sound uneven.. that or you'll have to roll off so much low end later to make it work with the regular tracks that it probably wont be worth the trouble. Worth trying though I guess.

I couldve sworn(not 100 percent sure) but i think for underoaths last cd, the screamer used an sm57...it looked like that in the video of them making their album.

I suggest an anger management course then you won't have this problem.

I love the Shure mics...they take a beating somehow and I need that around here. A real nice ribbon mic just wouldn't survive this place.

the SM7 seems to take some good abuse, i never worry about it. there's been screaming in it and it seems to not mind...but it is not a cheap mic and not treated as one.

the sm57 an 58.. well made...frkn workhorse. probably 58 for scremo...the 57 is a bit more directional, but it'd work with some singer diligence on positioning..

the 58 is probably a great choice.
I would think a SM58 would work though, there's somewhat of a similar sound to the SM7, with a little comp and eq you can get it really close I'll bet.

even cheaper yet is the PG58, I have a few...it pissed me off the kids with sideburns...bent up the screens by banging them to their heads.. but they still work. I don't get it, I never beat up my equipment...but I understand Hendrix, Townsend and others banged up stuff for some reason?

and you could have 3qty 58's for the price of one SM7...

I read Corey Taylor uses one in Slipknot (Platinum selling band (with screaming or is it called "eating the mic"?)..
their CD my son bought was really, really recorded well..even with the screaming it was most excellent and a surprise how they can mix screaming in and it sounds clean?

Screaming is like Rap; it's what you do when you can't sing. :D

I use an mxl V69.

Then gate, compress, equalise, and effect the performance accordingly.

screaming is so worn out these days but I say there really is a place for it when done right.

So you should use the Radio Shack mic then? :D

i think screaming is like a distorted guitar amp which is why the same mics seem to work well for both

little richard was kind of a screamer and ive always thought he had the prototypical rock voice. very controlled breakup and cuts through the mix.
