i love negative rep
what do you guys (that have run into this) do when you get one of those screamers in the studio that insists on cupping a hand held mic by the ball and screaming directly into it? (or directly on it, 0 distance)

personally i think it sounds like crap and try to steer them away from it, what about you?

First send screaming feedback through his headphones. Then tell him that he just blew the diaphram out by cupping the mic. Hold your hand on your forehead and say "oh man this sucks" several times. Throw in the phrase "that was one of my favorite mics". Once you have humiliated him and made him feel like a jackass set up a different mic with a pop filter and tell him not to touch it.

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to ocnor again. :D

...

I start moshing around and kicking the band members in the head, but it's all good 'cause it's under the guise of me just "getting into" the music.

Pop Filter in front of the mic and tell them if they touch any of it, you're done for the day. No refund, etc. They're not paying you to put up with their shit.

Call them an idiot, tell the to knock it the fuck off or get out.

I can do that, I have a good paying day job.

+1 :D

..........

I stop the machine and explain ONCE that they're not to touch ANY microphones once I've set them up. The second time, the session is over.

This is why every studio should have an SM58. Then set up a real mic a foot away ;)

Put the foam windscreen ball thingy on it. Might help a little. Or try to explain the difference to him between a "studio" performance and a "live" performance. On that Metallica DVD whatever it is called, Hetfield did some vocals holding an SM7 with the foam top in his hands with out a stand. Maybe you could give the guy a mic he can hold, but just tell him to keep his hands away from the business end and try not to change his grip on it too much (handling noise).

give them a non-handheld one. A large hanging condenser.
They're just used to singing live probably and it's a habit they've picked up. They won't feel the need to grab it if the mic doesn't look like the typical ones they use on stage.

Give them a 57, 58 or other dynamic and let them go to town. You CAN get a good recording this way.

Sometimes the energy and comfort level a screamer gets recording that way brings more to the recording that then the "pristineness" of a condenser on a mic stand with a pop screen....

Dude thats the best advice I've ever heard. I bet that works really well. I can picture the dude just standing there like a guy that just ran over an old lady or something while trying to impress his friends with his cool car.

Ask them if they think it sounds like crap. They're the ones that have to put up with the end result, after all.

they make these cool devices, you have the screamer singer put it around their neck and when they get too close they get safely shocked really bad until the habit is broken. some use this recording studio tool on their dogs.

I let them use a handheld mic to sing into and also set up a LDC infront of them as well and use the one that comes out the best.

The best way to get screaming recorded is to place a high quality condenser about 3 feet away from the person. Tell them not to move and just to scream. thats how i did it on my stuff and it turned out "good" for screaming i guess.
