is it worth the effort?

I have very mixed feelings about this question, so this will be a slightly long answer to the question. First of all, no, I haven't tried Scott's mod for the V67 / 2001.

Keep in mind that these mics use the same capsule and circuit boards, so they are very similar, BUT, there are some important differences. The shell and case design are also a major part of the difference in sound between the two mics.

The 2001 uses a very inexpensive transformer which I'm sure causes some ringing that shows up as high frequency harshness. Marshall uses a different transformer in the V67 which eliminates that problem. They also made some capacitor and transistor changes in the V67 to smooth out the response.

Scott's mod replaces the board and transistors with a very standard, proven transformerless mic circuit which would certainly benefit the 2001 greatly.

My problem is that I really like the sound of the V67 just as it is. If I were to modify the V67, I would probably just use premium parts and swap out the existing components, leaving the circuit intact.

I do have an MXL 2001 that I'll eventually send to Scott to have him mod, and I'm sure it will be a big improvement.

Stephen Paul has my two V67s and the latest report is that they are sitting in little pieces on his workbench. Since Stephen is responsible for producing mics that are the finest sounding mics I've ever heard in 50+ years in this industry, I'm very curious to hear what he comes up with for these mics. And that's putting it mildly.
