i cant hear the inputs of what i record in real time.

heres my setup:

mic (sometimes guitar) goes into MIXER (through MIC1)

MIXER goes into COMPRESSOR (out of Control Room L and R) and (into Input L and R)

COMPRESOR goes into M AUDIO EXTERNAL SOUND CARD (out of Output L and R) and (into Line Inputs 1 and 2)

M AUDIO information goes into PC via Firewire

M AUDIO sound goes to computer speakers (monitors) through Line Outputs 1 and 2

*MORE INFORMATION AVAILABLE AT REQUEST

as of right now I have to record my rap music with headphones half on. (Left ear has the phones on to hear beat, right ear does not have phones on so i can hear my self) because tha vocals dont play back in REAL TIME, only after im done recording and playback through Adobe Audition 1.5.

CAN SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP!!! its really a big deal and Ive been recording like this for soooo long enough is enough!

I'm not familiar with Adobe Audition, but there are bound to be some settings you can change. Do you have a speaker icon (monitor) button anywhere around your track? Do you have a manual you could refer to and look for monitoring inputs? You may want to check here: http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx?14@@.1de98f7a

I'd also look through my preferences for VST connections or Outputs.

Sorry, not much help.

well i was thinkin that the problem was in my external setup... not tha software.

i agree with sixways, it's a monitoring problem with Audition. not your gear

however, what kind of mixer do you have, there may be a much more efficient way of doing things depending on what you have.

i know this is kinda off point but i record with one ear out all the time...

is it that bad?

its just cheaper than paying for low latency gear/software....

Just a simple question Brok Homz.

Did you click on the M-Audio COntrol panel and make sure the outputs are not muted and the volume is turned up?

I have made that mistake before, Its easy to miss. :o

thats not it at all, i checked. It plays it loud and clear on when I play the song and edited the recorded audio, but it wont allow me to hear in realtime
:(

How about the monitor mixer?

Try that as well.

i have no idea what that is, but i know that the problem isnt on any software settings, im like 90% sure its how the hardware is routed, because in my old old setup (same mic in to a smaller behringer mixer "basically a pre amp" from tape out in to 1/4 input in the back of my pc) I could hear tha playback perfect and it was really convinent.

But i think it might have something to do with tha fact that my mixer goes into tha compressor then into tha external soundcard then into my pc. Because tha compressor isnt routed in tha mixer as a "effect" but rather Control Room Out. Or maybe its because tha soundcard is connected to tha pc via firewire and it cant transfer that info like that....

all i know is just now, i turned on tha mixer and Phantom Power and stuck my headphones into tha mixer and I could hear my voice clearly that far. Even tha internal FX was applied to my voice in REALTIME....

so im confused

PLEASE HELP ME!

Hey lets try this.

Lets re-conect everything. WHat mixer do you have? What compressor?

Start buy plugging the "Main outs"(not the control room outs) of the mixer into the Compressors inputs.
Then Conect the compressors outs into the M-Audio(what model do you have?).
Then conect the M-Audio to the computer.
Then conect the outs of the m-audio to the tape in of the Mixer(if its behringer its easy).
Then press the button that says "tape to control room" and plug in your phones into the mixers heaphone jack.
Turn up the "Phones/Control room" knob.
Conect your mic and turn o the phantom power.

See what you get........ Does it work? If you have monitor speakers conect them to the Control room out.

Let me know if it works. It shouldnt be too hard to make this work.
The monitor mixer function is for direct monitoring of signals through the M-audio device. But dont worry bout that I guess until we determine if its not just a hardware problem.

And if the compressor between the mixer and M-Audio is not working the best you can always hook it into the send/return FX Send.

Hope this helps. If not get back to me so we can get you setup.

wow you ARE good!

wow i never thought of that!!! that IS a good idea! problem is MAIN to compressor requires 2 XLRs and compressor to M Audio 410 requires another 2. And i do not have 4 XLR cables!!!!!

i should go purchase them at a local store, cuz that setup makes MORE sense!!!! control room outs should be for monitoring and Main Outs should be for the audio to travel to the recording device!!! but just 2 questions before i risk it haha.....

1. is XLR better quality then 1/4?

2. Does this setup really sound workable (the 410 has 2 XLR inputs) or is this just a guess?

THANKS FOR THA INSIGHTS!

Well I'm glad that this makes sense to you as sometimes people look at me funny when I say to try it that way.

1) XLR Vs. 1/4 is sort of a broad area as that they make TS 1/4 and balanced TRS 1/4 cables.
So My thought would be to Use the balanced 1/4 line ins on the 410(the xlrs on the front are combo jacls so they do both XLR and 1/4ts and 1/4 trs.
Are you sure that you compressor is only XLR In and out?
What brand and model is it?

I like to use balanced cables when ever possible in a signal chain.
Quality is the question. I dont hear a quality diference but Noise and other things can be an issue(I hear)......

But like I said I use balanced 1/4 trs or XLR's when ever I can.

2)I'm not realy sure what your asking here.......... If your saying will this way of connecting things work, Then YES! I have mine this way(except the compressor). It works great.
Am I saying it will definatly work? No... Why? because the only way to know if its a user setup error or a bad piece of hardware is to try it. :)

Just a couple of questions.
How long have you been recording? Is this your first setup? Have you done much research into routing and setting up your gear?
Most importantly have you spoken to m-audio about your 410 to make sure its not a bad unit?

Another way to see if everything is working is to do this:
If you have a mic plug it into the 410 in the front XLR jack.
Then plug you headphones into one of the 410's headphone jacks.
Do you hear anything?
Try this on all the XLR's on it and the headphone jacks.

What software are you using? Do you have the ins and outs setup right in the software?

Answer back on those questions and list as much of you gear as you can.

I realy wanna help ya get this setup going. I know how frustrating it can be to get some great gear and go "Damnit why isnt it working right?"............

Anything I can do to help and educate is fun for me.

Lemme know whats up! :)

kool thanks

ok thanks for tha reply thats really awesome .... ok

1. Are you sure that you compressor is only XLR In and out?

NO! infact i have 2 TS going to the Inputs (L side and R side) and 2 TS going out of the outputs to the 410.

2. How long have you been recording?

About 3 years now... just in my house though, nothing TOO hardcore!

3. Is this your first setup?

No, my first setup was this same mic (with a 48V battery) into a 1 CH behringer mixer (basically a preamp and NO phantom power!), from tape out into Line in on the tha back of the computer with tha factory soundblaster soundcard. My computer monitors were connected there too! (there was only 3 holes: mic in, line in and audio out)

4. you done much research into routing and setting up your gear?

not a whole lot. It kind of confuses me and plus there are no real recording studios in this small town, but it really interests me!

5. Most importantly have you spoken to m-audio about your 410 to make sure its not a bad unit?

no i havent, you think i should?

6. Another way to see if everything is working is to do this:
If you have a mic plug it into the 410 in the front XLR jack.
Then plug you headphones into one of the 410's headphone jacks.
Do you hear anything?
Try this on all the XLR's on it and the headphone jacks.

...... i actually tried that! and wow.... same thing... it records to the software but i cant hear it in REALTIME, im wondering if its because tha m audio sends tha info via Firewire to my pc and it doesnt get routed back the phones.

7. What software are you using? Do you have the ins and outs setup right in the software?

I am using adobe audition 1.5........ yes the tha ins and outs setup is all correct in tha settings!

this sucks!! please help :)

ok heres a scanned image of my setup (hope it helps) please show me the most effiecent way to utilize this equipment, and also what kind of cables/stuff to buy!!!!!

YOu know that when you get it to where you can hear it without the head phones...your mic will also hear the back tracks and re-record them as well.

1. Ok that explains a bit more about what compressor ect. And the Behringers all have balanced 1/4 in and outs just so ya know that.

2. Cool, That helps me know about were you are in terms of experiance.

3. Yeah when I started out I did the same thing, it worked for a while.

4. You may want to do some internet research on signal routing ect just to start familiarizing. I think Paul White may have written a book about this too.
Hes a great source.

5. It never hurts to ask M-Audio as that they are very nice and quite helpfull.
My friend is a dealer for them as well. E-mail them and they will get back to you fairly fast.

6. Have you right clicked on a track and seen if its selected to run to the 410's outs? And also you may want or need to remove your soundcard from the devices in AA 1.5....

7. Hmmmmm.......

This is odd. I have never realy had an issue with an m-audio card or interface.
Double check all connections. I hate sound like a dummy but I have done the most simple stupid thing like hooking a in to an out and been lost as can be.

I would do as most guitarists do and eliminate things that are or arent working till you find the issue.
Like trying the mic and haedphones and 410 alone or trying to hook it to your speakers and skiping the phones till you figure out whats not hooked up right or if the 410 is bad.

Hey a question.
Are you using reason with audition? I mean is reason rewired to audition?
Hows it work I mean is it smooth? I have reason 3.0 and would like to get audtion.

Let me know if you find anything out.

Later
