SB Live Value and HS2002

I just installed Home Studio 2002 on a computer using Win ME. I have two sound cards in my computer: Creative SB PCI, and a Sound Blaster Live! Value (both work fine with other music software). However, HS will not recognize the SBLive. The dropdown menus in Options/Audio/General list only the PCI as a device for Recording or Playback. I have installed the latest drivers from Creative, but still no luck. Is there something obvious I am missing?

Maybe this is the answer: Creative only has WDM drivers for the Live Value for Win 2000 and XP.

Since I'm running ME, does this mean I just can't use this sound card with Home Studio 2002 (unless I upgrade to XP)?

You can use the card, no problem. But you have to use MME-drivers. Go to Options -> Audio -> Advanced and check the "Always use MME-drivers, even...."-box.
 
Thanks, moskus. That's what I needed to know. Am I likely to have increased latency problems using MME drivers?
 
Yes, but I don't think there's anything you can do about that... :(
 
The only problem with them is that WinME don't have full WDM-support, but it may work.

I'm using the SB Live! Value also, but have winXP. So when I get HS2004 soon, should I do the opposite: "un-check" the "always use MME-drivers" box?

Yup :) Most likely you can use WDM.
If things getting weird, then change it wouldn't cost you a dime :)

I'm thinking/hoping WMD will adapt well. That would surely be worth a dime! :)

Does the SB Live! Value have ASIO drivers? Because HS2004 now supports ASIO.

You may also wish to consider upgrading your audio card to one that offers 24bit 96kHz sampling rates. The difference in quality will amaze you.

BTW, what ever happened to Matt LeTisier? Last I heard he was dating Donald Fisher's missus. :)

With Creative's driver, it can't. SB Live! cards can use ASIO with KX driver, but you're gonna lost alot of it's soundfonts feature (this driver only play soundfonts as mono). And when it's using ASIO, it locks in 48kHz sample rate. I wouldn't say it's the best option for you.
The only good reason to use SB Live! card is to do soundfonts (and it's price :D ). If you realy want the best for audio, get some better card :)

Correct me if I'm wrong Jaymz, but I think the SB Live! card is already locked at 48kHz internal sampling rate. This is one of the major limitations of the Creative range of audio cards. It can cause synch-drifting if your sequencer is set to say 44kHz for example. The re-sampling that takes place on the fly causes the synch to drift, and the longer the piece of music the more the synch drifts out. It's very noticable on long pieces of music.

The semi-pro audio card option with the SB Live retained for SoundFonts reproduction is clearly the best way to go.

Oh, and congratulations on the violin concert Jaymz! :) Hope you got it recorded on MiniDisc, then I can have a listen.

About the 48kHz lock, I guess that's right Blues :) At least, that's what I heard...

Thanks, old mate :) Yup, it's recorded on cassete deck on the mixer by the FOH operator. I also took a video shoot, but it's all still on the process (my brother handles all the documentation). May take a days or week to finish it :) I'll see what I can share then :) Thanks for your wishes :)
