SO got my mixer back. Pretty happy about that, so I put together a cover of Tiger Army's "Santa Carla Twilight" as a surprise for my gal.

It's a psychobilly band if you are unfamiliar, they use upright bass and usually have punk and 50's/60's rock influences (think elvis and the misfits somewhere in between for lack of better terms)--- anyway I don't have an upright so I opted for me 5 string with exposed poles and slapped away at that thing to get my bass sound and I am pretty happy with it.

I sorta did this moreso to get back in the swing of mixing than a great present... I actually learned the drums and bass AS I recorded it (theres like one 15 hour session in this track so far, lots of caffeine there) so performance is pretty good considering, but NOT perfect, so that being said ;)

This is also my first track I have ever done a full vocal performance on, so I'm looking for any feedback or help if you think I need it. I tried to keep everything upfront and honest vocally, but the backup vocal parts have been giving me trouble both in performance and mixing. I'm not ashamed of my voice, but I have never done vocal work in my life for th most part and only recently delved in, and it's turning out interesting... I sound a bit like nick 13 from tiger army itself mixed with a little davey havok of AFI, minus the extreme eccentrism.

blah.... anyway (yeah haha bleh I've come to suck your blood) the song is about vampires in love with humans and that stuff... what else does a song need? :p All the drums are (real) performed by me, same with bass, guitar, and vocals. oh and the mixing part, too, but thats not that important.

Santa Carla Twilight

Any feedback is always appreciated!!

Pretty nice cover, TA is a great band! too bad you don't have a double bass, cause a guitar will always be a guitar...
I'm listening on crappy speakers, so will coment when i listen to it at home.

Cool. I actually just redid some lyrics, changed the snare level a little, and the sound of the backup vocal shiz I'm having a little trouble with. So by then I'll hopefully have rendered and uploaded it. *warning* I change and reupload to the same file all the time sometimes without warning XDDD

You know what... I take it back, on my speakers at home the bass sounds kick ass... I also totallydig that snare sound. awsome!

wow thank you :)

Yeah what I did is a similar method to how one would play a standup, using a pick, but slamming and pulling off my entire hand. good stuff... I applied a light distortion to bring out the mid/highs some. not too much.. I want this to be a "round" mix as compared to my norm.... which is not round, very extreme usually.

anyone else?

I gotta bump this up... I updated a few vocal parts, and I need some feedback! cmon! tell me what it needs! >_<

Santa Carla twilight is an awesome song. Pretty good remake. :) It must be hard to get the bass sounding like the original. I've never recorded a standup bass and never heard one recorded like Tiger Army.

When you recorded the bass on your remake, did you you use a pick or did you stand it upright and finger slap the strings to emulate an upright bass.

The only real suggestion i have is with the guitar and vocals, they sound a little bright compared to the original. The original has that old Elvis rock n roll quality.

After all is said and done though, great job on a cool song.
