Where do you keep coming across this microphone?

Samson's web site sucks - for example, no frequeny charts. Though charts are commonly ignored by pros because of a lack of standardization among manufacturers, they are at the very least a sign that a company is TRYING to maintain a professional image.

Read the world-famous faq for more info on condenser choices that get the 'nod' on the BBS:

Sorry for the shameless plug :D

While the price looks attractive (3 patterns for less than 100 bucks) the performance isn't too stellar. Pretty noisy (23 dB-A).

yea true, i emailed the support to see if they could get me the full specs of the mic. thanks again people

I have a pair of the CO1's (one pattern), with shock mounts. Both mint, one never used, in factory boxes. They sound great, but the self noise is a tad higher than some... If that's not an issue for you, I'd be willing to offer a great deal on the pair. I commonly make vocal recordings with no accompaniment, so the self-noise was kind of an issue, though most people wouldn't notice unless you listened closely between phrases.

yea im just goin be layin vocals over hip hop instrumentals, and i can get rid of alot of noise in a program i have. u think it would work well for that?

I think you get better for $100.

I haven't used this particular mic, but have tried the CO2's (a pair of pencil condensers) which have a noise rating very close to the -23dB Rossi mentioned and in my opinion they were entirely UN-USEABLE........and I'm not an Audiofile ;) .

If your mostly going to use it for putting words on beats then you really dont "need" the 3 patterns and for a hundred bucks you could get a SP C1 or an Oktava MK319 or the Behringer B1 or the MXL V67.

Probably better for your money, especially the V67 or C1 from the experience of a lot of people on the BBS.

I checked out the C02s, too, and while they are noisy as well (22 dB-A), I didn't think they were completely unusable. SDs have higher self noise than LDs, usually. It depends on the situation. Their noise can be a problem on not-so-loud sources; the sound was pretty good for the price.

The C03 was worse in that it became even noisier when you switched to omni or figure-8. Soundwise I wasn't impressed. The SP B1 is a much better mic for the same price, if you don't need the extra patterns.

Sorry for not getting back... My internet providor went down for two days. If you're laying vocals over anything, then the self-noise won't be an issue at all. The CO1 vocal quality is excellent and Sound on Sound magazine gave it a fine review. For $125., plus shipping, you can have both of my CO1's WITH their shock mounts.

Yes and no. Other signals will mask the noise in most cases, BUT if you're stacking vocals with those mics, you'll wind up stacking noise as well. Also, the more compression you use to make the vocals fit into a more dense arrangement the more the noise will be amplified as well.

Point well taken, though I think with the CO1's the self-noise isn't that much above some others, the the general vocal quality is really quite good. The CO3's might be different, but I don't know.

No, I've never tested a C01, so what's the noise figure? It should be on the last page of the manual. If the C01 sounds anything like the C03, I wouldn't say it sounds excellent. The C03, soundwise, was acceptable, but no more than that. By comparison a SP B1 sounded much more open.

Actually, I'm looking at the manual, and the self-noise spec is not listed. I had looked for it because the otherwise excellent review in Sound on Sound mentioned that as the only negative. I have the SPB1, and love it, but I must say I thought the Samson CO1 does a fine job, at least on my voice. I haven't bothered to do an A/B comparison, which could be interesting...

well thanks for all the help guys, i got the marshall MXL V67g, it will do a fine job. thanks
