Splitting Mono Signal

Ok, basically I need to split a mono signal, have one going to tape and one going to my soundcard...I'm recording live and using the repro head of my tape machine, then using the digital track as the sync up track since there's a delay coming back off the tape.

The signal would be coming out of my preamp, and I figured I'd try one of these to split it:

I need to know if there's any kind of impedance problems or general bad things that happen when splitting a signal like this.

Thanks in advance!

is your preamp output balanced? if so, how? electonically or transformer?

are your tape machine and sound card inputs balanced? if so - what pin is hot on each?

depending on how your gear is balanced...if this splitting and or balanced/ unbalanced level connections are not done properly you will

1) hear a massive amount of distortion and possibly blow the output of your mic pre; or

2) lose half your signal (-6 dB)

i've done both...including blow an output with my 5050.

to do it "properly" and "idiot proof" (like me) you need something like this:

as far as how the level will react due to the dual impedance issues...not sure. i think that plays in...but it's over my head. i stop learning when things stop catching on fire...everything else is fair game!

good luck.
