Howdy folks. Well, I just built myself a new DAW and the old AMD 650 with Gadget Labs 8/24 has been put aside to make way for my new P4 2.53GHz system with a Lynxtwo card.

Anyhow, I'm in the process of checking out software for my new system. I was previously using Vegas Audio 2.0, since I didn't need midi and I really like the interface. But now I want to start doing midi stuff and I've downloaded demos for Cubase SX, Sonar 2.2 and Samplitude 7.0. After spending some time with each one, I'm definitely most impressed by Samplitude - the others seem like toys in comparison really (granted I haven't gotten that deep into them).

So, I don't have my new card yet and the demo will only let me play back 1 minute of music at a time, making it a little difficult to do any serious testing. So, has anyone here run Samplitude 7.0 through its paces yet? If so, what are your thoughts? I can do a competitive upgrade for $450, but thats still considerably more than either SX or Sonar.

Thanks for your input.

Haven't checked out Samplitude 7 myself but Computer Music gave it a pretty bad review recently. Said it was cluttered and overpriced. But then you always have to take reviews with a grain of salt.

Don't discount Cubase or Sonar right away because they are definitely not "toys". But at the end of the day it comes down to what you feel comfortable with and what suits your work flow, and if samplitude does that, then more power to you.

Well, I did a rough mix of an old Cakewalk PA9 project with Sonar last night. I must say, I'm defintely impressed, at least more than I was with my first tinkering with it. They've made some great changes since the last time I used cakewalk. And now that they support ASIO...

I still wonder why they haven't fixed that old bug with the Win2K resource meter showing 100% CPU load...

Hi, I use Samplitude Professional, as do several commercial recording facilities. If you're looking for a Midi sequencer with some audio thrown in, don't wate your money on Samplitude. There are better programs for midi, though midi is undergoing new development in the program. Samplitude is all about audio, as it has been for years, and it has the most pristine audio engine available for less than three grand. Also, it's object editing approach is brilliant. This is serious software with serious tools for serious audio production. I guess Computer Music doesn't like the "clutter" of all those serious tools......oh well, the pro's who use it do.

Thanks for the reply. I'm actually looking for a serious audio app with a little midi thrown in......

So, I spent some more time with the demo - the master effects (advanced dynamics, fft eq, room sim, etc.) are just awesome. Definitely some of the best I've heard. Even the built in eq on each track is decent - you can actually push the high end a bit without it hearing all the digitus. The interface is different than what I'm used to, but that will just take time. I placed my order yesterday along with the Lynxtwo card. Dropped a lot of cash, but I think I'll be happier in the long run.

ebeam - Hey, you don't work at EFI do you? ebeam is one of the products that we make, a networked write board.
Lynx and Samplitude, it doesn't get any better than that. I'm about to order a Lynx card myself. I'm sure you'll be very happy with your decision. Oh, there's a good Samp users group at Audioforums.com , another at SEKD.com, and the official one at Samplitude.com . The user community and the developers interact more than any software I've ever used, and user ideas are implemented regularly. There's practically nothing Samp can't do, usually a few different ways. If you don't see how to do something, these forums are great for getting quick answers.
Cheers, RD

Cool, I'll have to check out those forums - could be useful once I get going.

I work in an electron microscope lab - thats where the name comes from.
