This is another tune I did in the same session. And sadly enough, the same crappy-sounding click track. :)

Why am I posting yet another tune so soon? I'm curious to know what people think of the contrasting sounds I got using different gear on the two tunes I have posted . . . the other being from my previous thread.

The major differences are as follows: This particular track, "What do you think," was recorded in about an hour and a half as opposed to an hour. I got a chance to process/mix it a little more (maybe another hour's worth of mixing). But the biggest differences were in the mic selection, as well as the compression.

This particular track has Joemeek all over it. I drove the Meek 6Q almost to the breaking point and basically compressed the shit out of both the vocal and guitar tracks on this one (with the meek), whereas the previous tune I posted was all run throught the Mackie and compressed more transparently with software comp.

Also, the vocal on this track uses an SM7 as opposed to the condenser I used on the other one. You can hear how much warmer and less hyped this vocal track is . . . and you can probably hear how much punchier, more compact, and aggressive-sounding the guitar and vocal tracks are with the Joemeek.

Please forgive me again for the god-awful drum click track :) I will post a new one with real drums soon.

I am curious, though, to know if anyone can tell what the Joemeek imparts to this sound as opposed to the cleaner sound of the last track I posted earlier. As I know I have gotten a lot of PM's from some of the newbs wanting to know what "the Joemeek sound" is. Well, here you go. :) To me, it just brings a whole different dimension and level of aggressiveness - dare I say a "radio-ready?" punchy sound?

Thanks!

Chess

ps - and no, I'm not trying to kiss up to you know who, either. :) lol.

Ahh, this one is really much better than the other one, IMO. Has a much more pleasing balance, to me. I didn't even mind the crappy canned drums. I like the tambourine-type deal that comes in round 1:20, though the closed hat that's only on the left side is supremely annoying. Love the way that guit on the left sounds. Wish the bass rumbled just a bit more. All in all real good, specially if this too was pre-production stuff, wanna hear the final if so.

Oh, Chess,

Did you pan the verb(?) on that guit that's on the left center or is that just how it came out sounding, either way I like it.

You've got me inspired about using my MQ3 again! I loved the vocal sound with that SM7 and your Meek. Guitars were pretty punchy sounding too. I thought the tune was well written--nice lift going into the chorus and I liked that rhythm figure--almost like the Zombies circa 2002 if you know what i mean. Gives it a British seasoning.

I'm still trying to really understand how to use my MQ3, but I can see the value now if I can get it dialed in right.

hrmm.....I dont really like the way the guitars sound.....

maybe a little too much verb/room or something...I am not sure.

The bass is definatelt "punchy" - maybe even too much...

I think as things build up more around 1:20 it sounds better.

Just my dumb opinion...

All in all...pretty good...I actually think I liked the sound of the other one.

Who is Joe Meek and how do I meet him? Seriously, what is it? What does it do? What does it affect? etc. I would like to know how different the song would sound without it.

I was thinking "I like the sound of the guitars," as I was reading wes480's post. Just differences of opinion. Funny.

Better than the last one for sure. Sung better, with more energy. Fewer harmony issues. Quite good I thought for a couple of quick takes.

Maybe it's just me and how little I care about what drums sound like. But the canned stuff doesn't bug me at all. If you hadn't mentioned it, I never would have paid attention to them.

Yea, it's a delay, but it's panned. figured it might give it some space.

Ir really think some good, real drums will bring both tunes to life. They give a song it's sense of space and depth, in my opinion. Make everything else sound better.

this one is a step up from your other tune, and has improvements in just about all catagories. The vocals are even sung better and isn't so hi-end hyped...

Hey,

The space and definenition were nailed on this tune. I dug the placement of everything. Nice mix.

I will not pretend to know the "meek sound" but, i've heard it used alot and always in a good way. Popular little pod/interface that sucker is.
your gits sound good but, the distortion git on the left could use a crisper element IMHO. I dig the simple fills and the overall interplay of the gits and respective tones. A solid venture for sure.

At about the 2 min mark I thought it would be nice to introduce an new instrament to the mix but that is just me.

I am constantly put in my place by the nice, simple mixes on this board and the clean visions. This song is a good example of clean and true(if not outstanding) home recording.

Nice job. I hope to gain the skill level you have with some more time and practice.

Theron.
