Same old question.....

Look Mom, I can play!
I was messing around with soft synths last night on my laptop. Win xp, crappy Soundmax onboard sound card and driver.

I recorded one track okay but then when I went to lay drums on a new track using VSC and Piano Roll View, I could not get the second track to only record drums, and not the synth on the first track as well.

In win mixer, all the Volume controls are muted except for the main volume control and the Recording mixer has only four Properties to choose from (no others available), Microphone, CD Player, Line in and Wave out mix. Of course, If I select anything other than Wave out Mix, my drums won’t record.

Any suggestions? If this was my home DAW I would immediately suspect “What U hear”, but there is no such box on my laptop.

Did you have the drums on Channel 10?

Did you set set the inputs to the correct channels? Track one to channel 1 and track two to channel 10.

The first audio track (track 1) did not have any channels set in midi track 3 using the Dxi instrument.

Audio track 2 (VSC) had its midi track set to channel 10 for drums.
 
Mute all the channels but the one you want to record to audio, then record it.
 
Having read AlChuck's reply I can see what you're trying to achieve. Silly me, I should have read your post more carefully Paul. :(

Alchuck, thanks but that really doesn't help me cos I want to listen to track 1 when I record track 2 (without recording track 1 again on track 2). Have you got any other suggestions? Anyone?
 
Can't you record it as a MIDI track while you listen to the rest? Then render it to audio later.

Bounce track 1 to audio first so you're not triggering the softsynth when you record track 2.

Well it sounded like a good plan:( I bouced the audio and midi track to an audio track and then muted the original midi and audio tracks. I recorded a new audio track but still the bounced Dxi track recorded as well. I even deleted the Dxi midi/audio tracks but still no joy.

It seems that whatever audio tracks there are, every time I go to record another track, it records all the existing tracks as well.

Its damn frustrating:mad:
 
Paul, I suspect it might be the Wave Out setting in your mixer. Why won't your drums record if you select Line In?

Also, what are you selecting as the input source in the DXi track. It should be set to none. You should only need an output on a DXi track.

I'm at work ( :) ) so I can't test any of this, but here's what I would try.

MIDI Tracks In = none
MIDI Tracks Out = appropriate DXi's.
DXi Tracks In = none
DXi Tracks Out = stereo pair that your speakers are connected to

Windows Mixer Recording Control = Line In

I'm pretty sure that should work. I think the Wave Out setting is similar to What U Hear.

Hmmm...

I always record the MIDI events only when doing multitracking with a softsynth like VSC. That way you can have recorded tracks trigger VSC with the recorded MIDI events while laying down new tracks.

Leave audio bouncing until the very end when all your MIDI tracks have been recorded.

You re quite right, the Wave Out is like a What U hear command. The only thing that I realised from what you said is that to record, the Dxi track has to have an input;)
