Same old effects

I got the first vs 880 back in 1996. But the brand new 2480 has the same 5 year old effects as mine. Not very appealing in terms of an upgrade. Also the amp sims need a decent SPEAKER sim to be worthy. Take lesson from Line 6.

My 880 is gathering dust as I prepare for new gear. But it served me well.

Hmm. I also have owned the VS880 since around 96 and you raise an interesting point. It would be nice for us old timers to have a drastic boost in effects power. However, not only does the VS2480 addresses more pertinent issues, but the effects still outperform anything within its price range.

Important improvements include:

- More tracks/inputs!
- Higher sampling rate and bit depth
- Motorized faders: I always wanted this because it was such a pain to load up a song and figure out where the faders were positioned by cross referencing the screen (but that just might be me)
- Monitor/mouse/keyboard: Drag and drop your edits? Excellent. Do it on a VGA monitor? Even more excellent. This defeats the PC-based user argument that these functions are better on a PC.

And the effects are still excellent.

- IMHO, the guitar sims are still WAY better than the Line 6 crap.
- There ARE speaker choices for speaker cabinet types such as combo, stack, etc.
- There are mic placement selections (which I'm not too sure if such is available on the Line 6 stuff).
- Roland has since included additional effects including: mastering effects, such as multiband compression, and monitor simulators (the quality of which I cannot comment on).

That being said, I haven't seen any company improve on the VS-880 more than Roland itself.

Maybe it's just me but I can't get a decent tone out of any of the Boss or Roland amp modelers.

Early word on the NEW Line 6 is we have a new king of the hill. Gotta wait till late fall to see.

Waiting builds character

Plus, the same old effects sound better on the 2480 due to better internal processing. Dan Krisher demonstrated this in the Roland Clinic. I've never owned anything but the 2480, but this has been confirmed to me by individuals who have owned the earlier VS machines. They have said the effects are notably better.

I still like Roland. If they would've put a midi INSIDE a VS like the new Tascam I would have bot one. As for me, I'm going a new direction with MAC etc... but will miss the simpler days.

Line 6 better than COSM?

Try this:

For a good dirty tone, use slight external gain before the VS. I.e., use a distortion pedal between your axe and the VS. Then kick in a good amp model (not the guitar multi's) and tweak the pedal and the model parameters accordingly. I've gotten tones that rival my Boogie with this process.

Regarding the new Line 6, everyone alleges that their new stuff is going to be the best. I've A/B'd the SansAmp and Roland COSM with the POD and stuck with the SansAmp. We'll see (or hear) how the new stuff compares when it comes out.

Midi

Every Roland hard disk recorder is loaded with midi. The more I'm reading what Cereal is saying, the more I am tended to believe he has never seen a Roland hardd disk recorder in his life, not even from a distance.
All the amp sims have speaker emulators on board too.
I am sure that the Line 6 is a good additional recording tool in your set-up. I don't see any reason to compare digital tools from 1996 wih the ones that came out 4 years later.

Whatever... such is life.
