Running Cakewalk and SoundDiver simultaneously

I've been trying to do this for some time now with no luck. So I asked support at Line6 (I use the SoundDiver that came with my POD)

Here what I sent them:

"I am a POD owner and have attempted to use SoundDiver to edit
tones while recording with my sequencing software (cakewalk pro
audio 9.) I connect my POD to the joystick/midi port on my SB
Live soundcard.

My problem is that I have not been able to run both SoundDiver
and Cakewalk simultaneously, so that I can edit guitar tones
during my recording sessions. When I open Cakewalk first, and
then open SoundDiver, SoundDiver is unable to detect my POD. If
I open SoundDiver first, and then open Cakewalk, Cakewalk is
unable to use any of my MIDI ports.

How can I use these two programs simultaneously?"

Here is the reply:

"Hello,
Unfortunately, this is normal. Cakewalk and SoundDiver cannot be
used at the same time. The MIDI drivers need to be dedicated to
one or the other.

Thanks, Line 6"

Actually, I think that is not strictly true in general -- it can be done if the soundcard has a multiclient MIDI driver. Or I guess one could have two MIDI interfaces, the one on the SB Live and, say, a MIDISPORT connected to the USB port. Then you could use the SB Live to control the POD only, and Cakewalk to use the MIDISPORT only.

There's another alternative -- the POD studioware panel in Cakewalk. It's really difficult to absorb how to use it and get it to work -- it's truly a badly-implemented feature, very non-intuitive and clumsy to use, IMHO -- but it does work... But then, Sound Diver itself is also one of the most ineptly-designed programs, from a user interface perspective, than I've seen in a long time. (again, only my opinion).

The one thing that the Studioware panel won't do is the tone transfer library thing (at least I don't think it will), but if you're just wanting to choose patches and change parameters via MIDI during a sequnce, that'll do it.

AlChuck, has that worked for you?

I connect my POD to the joystick port on the sblive. So I tried disabling the "SBlive MIDI in" driver in cakewalk (with the intent of freeing the driver for SoundDiver.) Is this what you mean? I tried this and it didn't work.

Can't use the 2...

At the same time. Both programs use the same windows resouces, so it has to be one or the other. AlChuck is right, though, Cake will controll the POD just fine except for editing libraries. If you set up the right .ins file you can control patch slection on the POD from within Cake, which is all I usually have to do in practice. If I need to create or define a preset for a song. I quit cake and do so in Sound Diver, then call up the preset from within cake. Works fine.
