Nice Man I like the bass, the guitar riff is slightly nutty, and your voice is out out of control too.. like when you say "put the razor back in your voice" ... That was mint.

Im not really qualified to give it any critisism but speaking for the normal population.. this song rocks!.

Cool tune and recording/mix! Almost sounds like old Police but with attitude. This is damn good.

Sluice as a goose, I'll listen to this later when I get home..

I'm lookin' forward to it..

Yeah, as mentioned, old Police with an attitude, great stuff.

Kept me interested the whole 7.

Top notch stuff. I really liked it. Very Police-sounding.

I liked all the little guitar riffs going on - lots of little things going on that kept it interesting.

The only thing constructive I could add was that the vocals are slightly back in the mix, I had trouble hearing in a few spots.

Helpful as always!

First off, thanks everyone for taking the 7 minutes out of your lives for this...I couldn't sqeeze it into a 3 minute pop song...or a convenient 4 MB file!

I have a remix uploading right now...with less bass (Thanks once again Mixmkr) and it seems to be so much more clear. After listening to it on CD in a couple car stereos I could hear the bass was stealing a LOT of space. I raised vocals where I saw fit, EQ'd some gits, and just hopefully found some better overall balance. I don't much care for MP3's, but what can we do? Other than get T1's for everybody. :D

JAMAL- I was a big fan of Tool right up til Laterallus. They sound so processed and over produced now to me. I don't really hear human beings in their music much these days. Still, while I am certainly no Maynard James Keenan, I'm definitely not insulted by the Tool comparison :D Thanks for the 2nd listen!

Mixmkr- I think I've cleared the road for your excellent ears...

Axe4Yahweh- Thanks for hanging in there...glad you liked it...

Clay- those are really cool comments man. Thanks! If you happen to see this, tell your daughter I said hello and thanks as well.

mkg- You're too kind. And as far as that lyric goes- close enough. You got the point.

Fenderlikingood- Appreciate the positive feedback. BTW, you've got a really clever handle...love it. Been thinking of getting another Strat...

Guernica- I took some of your thoughts into consideration as well on the remix...appreciate the time frames. And I know you're busy like me and don't have a shitload of time for listening, but you do what you can. Thanks so much.

Lt. Bob- I re-Eq'd that snare...hopefully it doesn't sound so make-believe. Thanks....looking forward to our collab.

NitroTrain and Demensia- Thanks for listening guys

Trackrat, Lynx, and TripleM - You know, I posted a song called "Dry" (or maybe it was "Rhythms") and someone made Sting references...while I don't listen to much of it, how could we have missed hearing it over the years. I'm 28 now, so I think I first heard them on Synchronicity...good album IMO.

SAM- I'm looking forward to your thoughts as always, particularly since this one is so much heavier than what I've been recording lately. I don't think it sounds as good as your new instrumental, so maybe you've got some advice for me. Hopefully it's not too mid-heavy. That last post of "Dry" I put up was a total fuck up. I had several buttons turned off when I mixed it, and somehow totally missed it- pobably burned out ears.

Sluice,

Really like the off-tempo stuff, the interesting rhythms in the intro. That clean rhythm guitar is very sweet. Drums are creative. Very cool instrumental lead-in to the chorus. Dissonance done the right way is just plain cool  and you did that.

You have that chest-thump kick drum, as Blue Bear describes it. I kind of craved a high synth or something backing the second verse... nice dynamic vocal delivery, and good singing as usual. this is the best mix I've heard from you. Very involved; probably lots of work  and automation? ;)

The 'verb on your vocals I guess is just a matter of taste -- almost your signature vocal sound :) The secondary vocal line coming in at 5:06 sounded a bit covered up (the Maynard James Keenan-like "f***ing" line :))

Way cool how you mixed the part right before 6:00 -- the mids above 500Hz were gone, and suddenly reappear as you go into the quiet part. That would freakin' spin my head around if I were listenin on phones!

I'd have to listen to this in a better room to get a better critical listen Sluice because frankly, you've reached that level where the problems are getting smaller and harder to hear :) Hopefully from "participant", this will do for now ;) Very creative guy, you are.

Chad

PS: Just noticed the "Tool" comments by others. Wanted to let you know I didn't read any responses before posting this. So, theres more than one of us that think "Tool" came into play here :)

I listened to the updated version, couldn't stream it though, even with cable!

Real tight playing, the bass sounded just right to me.
I like your guitar sound, really huge!

I dig the production.

Wow 32 tracks, how do you keep track of what your doing?
I get lost with 16!:D

Cool stuff!

Best to you,
Pete

Participant- I've been noticing and appreciating your attention to detail here lately, on my own and others' mixes. You're doing good things here. As for the Tool...I honestly could think of no other way to deliver that line but straight and hard, as would MJK. Apparently there's some Sting in there too.
I started this one off mostly for fun and to practice a "bigger" production, but I got sucked into it (more so than I think my girlfriend would like). With all these Tool references, I'm hoping it doesn't sound like a rip-off, cuz honestly, I can't stand their new album, or live show. Aenima was so much better.
Anyway, I was checking out some tunes, and I saw you posted so...always interested in your thoughts man. Back to the others.

I listened last night, but didn't have time to comment....

I love this song!

I just want to *listen* to it....you talanted dude!

Great job,

/DMM

damn..

it's almost too much.. I have listened to it 5 times in a row and haven't been able to squeak out a comment..

This is ahead of me..

I do hear things I don't like about the sound, but I don't know how to describe it....

I'm going to burn this to a disc so I can play it on my actual stereo, and I will get back to this tomorrow..

I just want to listen right now..

Great tune! Kind of an epic ... reminded me very much of a progression rock track with kind of a Sting / The Police feel to it in the verses, though the chorus is something else altogether. It is a good mixture!

When the Chorus came in, the vocals were a bit hard to make out and got kind of lost in the mix, wheras in the verses they sound clear ...

Good lyrics and I really like your vocal style on this. Real nice playing throughout!

Great job!

This is a very ambitious piece of music! I dug the overall mix and have to disagree with mixmkr about the bass. I didn't think it was too loud at all. Like several others, I wanted more vocal. Not across the board, but in certain places where the lyric tends to get buried. You know me--I wanna hear those words!

If I have any suggestions, really, it would just be to do some sonic play with a few things. Perhaps, a verse ending line with the vocal effects turned off and brought up some, or maybe pull up a key drum fill or two--just enough to scare the listener out of complacency! Overall, I thought it sounded full and the guitars sound very well recorded to me. Since its almost 7 minutes, a few sonic devices that would take the whole thing in a completely different space for a bar or two would break it up a bit--if you feel like experimenting. 35 freaking tracks!???

Man, I hope you have automation! Nice job. Keep rockin in the free world! (no, it doesn't sound anything like HIM:D) I can tell you've put time and energy into this and it shows.

Ok, I think I've got enough now...

I know there's a lot of different ways to go with this, especially given its scope, so I'm going to put it away for a while. I was mostly looking to see if there was anything absolutely overbearing in all those tracks.

Museman and mcmd- thanks for the listen fellas!

Sam- hope it wasn't a bad trip or something :D

boydrj- I'm sure there are still some vocals that need defining, and I appreciate the reinforced opinion...I may repost this in a few weeks if I make significant changes (which, if I know myself, I probably will.)

Crawdad- you're damn right I have automation! However, there is not as much of it on this as you might expect. The vocals parts are spread out over 5 or 6 tracks, so I could manage them better without screwing around with tooo much automation. Same with guitars. For example, the opening theme is just one guitar doubled, but later on I have I think 5 layered git tracks. This is my amateur way of compensating for the limitations of my Sure SM's in my apartment. Remarkably, no one called the cops on me while recording this. That fear tends to hold me back some.
As for the bass, Mixmkr was spot on. You probably on ly had the chance to skim through other responses, but this was a quick remix where I lowered the bass a couple db after I tried it out in my car.
The many comments about not making out lyrics is understandable...I already know them, so it makes it always kinda challenging for me. :( Same goes for the over all vocal sound. Later when I came back to it, it will be like a new song to me, so...

Anyway, thanks everyone for the tips!

Tom

You have some very impressive sound choices and moods here. The song is very aggressive and works very very well. This is some seriously good stuff. I can't hear anything bad in the mix, but I ain't trying to hear any mistakes either. Just the music. It's damn good and moody. You definately have created your own weird recognisable style. There's not exactly the usual chords and changes here, aren't there?

Ok, while I'm here, I can criticise something, right? Your drum sound needs something. The snare could use a little more reverb :D Ok, I just had to dig something up there. Don't take me seriously, though. I'm one of those critics who MUST find something to whine about, in the fear of not sounding like a real critic. The toms at 5:32 did distort, so you might wanna check your levels.

Fantastic

Sounds very dramatic, but at the same time very honest, hard to acheive.

Long song, but so good, am glad.

You are very talented, my friend.

Mix, and recording sound damn good on my end.

sluice:

On a 10 yr old comp with dial up connection here in Taiwan, I did my best and heard about 1:20 of you song. Based on this 1:20, I must say it's already got a nice dynamic going (like your other stuff) really wish I could hear more, but I will have to wait til i get back to the US. Good job!! Nice space you created and not so in your face<<in a good way!

I THINK IT SUCKS!

Just kidding. Very good. I can tell you spent a lot of time on this. I like that style of music. I will listen to some more of your stuff.

SLuiCe my man.. This is real music.. There are very few things around that I label as such.. When I say real music, I mean I can listen to it and pretend it's a real band that I would listen to..

The only thing is this.. This tune doesn't sound as good when played really loud.. I'm sure most people don't listen to things as loud as I sometimes do, so they wouldn't notice, but something about it doesn't hold up when cranked.. I don't know what would help it because as it is, it is probably better than anything I'll ever do.. When the heavy part comes in, there are a few minor 'brain darts,' and when the heavy part comes in, that very first china is harsh.. The guitar sounds and playing are great but mid-range sounding in the heavy parts....Most people would only notice it if they were playing it at a good loud volume.. As i said, I have no idea how to fix this.. I can only say that the sound somehow needs to be warmer and less like a complete digital sterile sound.. This is taking it to a fine point, but if you could make it sound warmer somehow, it would be better..

The song itself is a masterpiece.... of shit!

One of the greatest tunes I have ever heard by someone I almost know..

I stopped rating threads, but I would rate this 5 stars.. Now please take the entire mix out of the ice box!

O.K. I hit you up with some stars..
