Okay, I've got 3K to blow and this is what I've got in mind:

Alesis LX20 ADAT (1000)
Mackie 1402 mixer (550)
Echo Layla sound card (600)
Sound Forge 4.5 (330)

...with enough left over for a couple mics.

Comments, suggestions????

Good point on the monitors! The fact is, I've never used proper monitors because they're so expensive. Instead, I've used headphones, pa speakers, etc...whatever is available and gives me the best sound at that particular moment. I've never even been AROUND actual monitors, so I don't know any better. Yeah, that's it... I don't know any better.

Hey Vurt,a lot of people forget that monitors are 1 of the most important assets in recording. You cannot judge your mixes on regular home or pa speakers because they will npt provide the flat response you need to really HEAR your mixes. It is the most essential ingredient in your mix!
Home stereo speakers are designed to provide you with additional low bass boost and extended hi's. When you are recording and listening to your mix thru home speakers, you MAY think that you are hearing a killer mix but what you're actually listening to is the speakers making up any shortcomings you may have missed during your mix sound good.
A decent pair of monitors can be had starting from 200.00 on up. Use the "SEARCH" function on this BBS for addtl info on monitors. Or check out http://www.samash.com ,www.musiciansfriend.com ,www.allprosound.com

Good Luck!

I know, I know, I know. I've read it before and know you're right MRC, and I hate it. What I didn't know though was that I can get a set for $200. That's not bad, so I'll check some out in that range and either ditch a mic, or dig deeper for some more cash. That's another story though that I'm going to bring up in a few minutes.

thanks!

Hey Vurt, you can instead send me that 3K of which I'll use
it to invest 4 you and in 10 years I'll send you back 3K plus an additional 3k! Think about it! :)

Mars sells the Mackie 1402 VLZ Pro for $449 everyday.I'd use that extra C-note towards the XT20 and lose the LX20.Better transport and A/D converters,a more pro piece of gear than the LX.Also, check out Alesis' ADAT PC thingie f or your sound card if you're already decided to get an ADAT "cause it'll enable you to do better editing on your PC.

Please don't mention the word invest to me for a while, MRC. I had a load in a bio research co. for a long time, got rid of it, and it has since tripled.. no wait...almost quadrupled! It's been a while but I'm still pissed. If I still had it, I certainly wouldn't be using a pa to do my monitoring (by the way, I'm looking at the Alesis Monitor One speakers).

You know V-Ray, the 1402 isn't even going to work even if the good people at mars or 8th street or Pluto come down here and dump one on my porch for free. I want 8 outs, and it doesn't have them.

I'm beginning to think 3K isn't enough.

Tell you what MRC, you send me 2K NOW, I'll invest double that in a few months in a stock that'll immediately start to dive into the shitter. Now wait, here's the beauty of it - just when that 4K is worth about .04, you drop all the dough you have in it, and I'll sell my shares all to YOU. You'll be loaded in no time.

Oh, V-Ray, if you mean the ADAT-Edit, I don't want to have anything to with that thing. I think that's why I'm getting the Echo Layle. I think.

Don't forget cables! You're gonna need a pile of 'em.
Event 20/20's are down to $300 a pair....
A CDR burner will come in very handy.
You mentioned SF 4.5: what are you gonna use for multitracking software?

Yup, I'll need cables, but I've already got the burner and am not sure why I would need multitracking software. If I go through the mixer into ADAT and then shoot that over into PC through echo Layla for edit with SF, what do I need multitracking software for?

are those events generally held in higher regard than those Alesis's I mentioned?

thanks,

Adam

Say Adam, just a thought here. I’ve been using a standard Pentium 3 computer with a regular old SB Live card for mixing with over the past year. If you’re just using the computer to mixdown with, an SB Live is good enough (if you don’t mind the 16 bit sound which I think is fine.)

More importantly, I highly recommend Cool Edit 2000 for mixing down with. For a 50-dollar download it’s incredible. Don’t confuse this with Cool Edit ‘Pro’ for mutitracking on the PC. That’s a lot more money and gives you 64 tracks. One neat thing about the cheaper version is that it has a 4-track plug in available for an additional 50 bucks. I just downloaded it yesterday and to my great surprise I found that what it gives you is actually 4 pairs of ‘stereo’ tracks and, each individual track can be recorded and overdubbed on etc. There are a couple of limitations as to panning abilities and stereo functions if you try to use it like an 8 track but still…it’s an amazing bargain. For 200 bucks a guy could have an SB Live and basically an 8 track digital recorder (although it would be limited to only 2 tracks recording at a time because of the SB Live.)

Now what’s this got to do with your mixdowns since you won’t be multitracking on your PC? CROSSFADES! With 4 sets of stereo tracks available while mixing, your abilities to do crossfades would be limitless. Also, the effects that come standard with Cool Edit are really extraordinary for the money. It also allows you to record and save in an extremely wide variety of file formats. Please do visit the Cool Edit forum on this site before you spend a ton of money on a high-tech soundcard/mixing software system. I think you’ll hear nothing but praise for this product and, really, a 16 bit SB Live card is plenty in my opinion for mixing down with. And it does have an optical input for your Adat.

Good luck.

Well, thanks for all the input folks, but some bad shit has come up this weekend that is sure to bring a hammer down on my funds within the next couple of days. In fact, I'm probably going to have to spend a lot more than than this setup would have cost.

All is not lost though - I should still be able to do this before too damn long, making all of your help very worthwhile.
