They seem reasonably priced £60 for a matched power quad,

"Amp Guru Andy Ruhl's comments:
This is a nice sounding tube and the quality seems to be getting better and better. Ruby's guarantee is the best there is, so that should be enough reason to check them out. The sound is similar to the Svetlanas, but maybe not as "refined". These are supposed to be knockoffs of the classic Sylvania 6L6GC STR tube that came in 70's Fenders and Boogies, which is generally considered the best of the high power 6L6GC's ever made."

Any better ideas for the same price range?

I like the Ruby's alot. I through them in my Fend 64' bandmaster, playing loud metal/jazz fusion... did good. They faded out within about 4-5 months which is a little shorter than average. None the less they're good I liked em...I wasn't too impressed with the preamp tubes though...I've yet to really find something that makes a real difference.

I liked the Groove Tube 6L6 the best with a high mid hardness matched pair. But they burnt out in like 2 months...

Personally I'm about to try them ol jj tubes from www.eurotubes.com... do I think there's some magical difference NO.... but I always try a different pair just to see what I like...

Refer to the other thread about a 70's Fender Silverface.

I have used ruby tubes in my 76 marshall, 94 mesa trem-o-verb and 62 magnatone.....Overall my sound quality was never the same as it was with my previous tubes (GT's and other various original mans)...I ended up buying all new tubes ( although I kept the rubys' for backup)...just my .02.

IMHO the best of the current 6L6GCs are Svetlanas, but be careful, I think the current Svetlanas are different. The ones I am talking about are the winged C's. I have used JJs and the Rubys and the Winged C's are better than both of them. This was especially true in my siver faced Twin.

However...

The absolute best tube you can put in there is the Sylvania 6L6GC. I have tried damn near everything in that amp including the following tubes.

1. RCA Blackplates
2. Jan-Phillips 7581A
3. Jan-Phillips 6L6GB
4. GE 6l6GC
5. Tung-Sol 5881s
6. GE KT66
7. Mullard EL37

None of these sounded better than the Sylvania 6l6GC. It has wicked headroom, and a kick ass bottom end. They aren't that much more expensive than the JJs or the Ruby's. Don't believe the hype surrounding these new tubes. They are nice, but not made anywhere near as well as the Sylvanias, or any other NOS tube. Get the real deal..they sound better, and will last 10 times as long.

Well I think that is a definative answer, I'll take it on board next time I retube.
