Thinking of putting some roxul safe n sound between the joists of my basement but I read that that stuff is meant for the interior of walls and I don't intend on installing drywall to cover my ceiling so is there any other material you can use? Like sheets or something? Is there a health hazard for that stuff if it's not contained?

Why? Is your basement your studio? Read some of the threads here, if you are trying to dampen the sound going upstairs, then use the standard pink stuff between joists.

What frequencies are you trying to "fight"? Or just control noise?
Depending on what of the above, try Roxul 60 or 80

I'm trying to prevent sounds upstairs from coming downstairs as I don't live alone.

The sound is transmitting through the floor to the joists, insulation between the joists alone won't help. Read all the threads in this section of the forum before spending a lot of extra money on acoustic insulation for this use. The experts have given lots of advice.
