hi,

I am using Cubase SE3 and recording guitars directly through my sound card as audio along with miked vocals etc. I have also been using keyboard controllers connected by MIDI to control VST instruments both within Cubase and others that I have downloaded...so far no issues. After a power cut I had to re install a number of VST synths so to prevent this faff again I purchased a hardware synth, a Microkorg. I can record this as audio through the same process as my guitars but i cant seem to get it to work with the midi connection. I can get the DAW to record the midi information from the synth but I cant get this midi information to make the synth sound. I have tried all the help sections though these seem to apply only to on board VST.
I know it is probably something very very simple but its very very frustrating. I have tried MIDi to usb cable and also old fashioned 5 pin Din to Din, both of which work with the other keyboards.any suggestions?

From your description, everything is working as it should. You can't get audio from the midi data, you need a sound generator. Luckily for you, you have one; the microkorg!!.

Play the recorded midi data back out to the korg and record the audio as you would with a guitar.

If you want to use the midi within Cubase, you would need a VSTi, but then what's the point of having the microkorg?

+1.
Midi is just data. There's no sound untill it hits a synth, whether hardware or software.

Either pipe the midi into a softsynth or run a return cable from interface to your hardware synth.

Have you got "MIDI thru" ticked as in the attached sshot?

But I am a bit worried as to why you have had all this trouble post a power cut?

I have had very few cuts but often bang the mains off this PC (when her indoors is tapping her foot for Sainsburies!) Never caused any problems.

My HPi3 laptop regularly dies when the battery expires, all the proggs on it are still fine, Cubase LE6, Samplitude silver, Adobe audition, Reaper.

If you can't find out why a power cut did this, buy an Intrr PSU!

Dave.

My PC is getting on a bit now probably 8-10 yrs and I think the battery on the board which I think keeps the clock going (making this up) is dead. I know if I unplug it the calender reverts back to that date I imagine it was built. dont know if this would cause the software to dissappear....mind you cubase didnt so its a bit of a mystery

On Desktops the battery is either a charged capacitor, or on older ones they were a watch battery. I am not sure on laptops, but they are not the battery that is used for its main power. It would reset every time you changed batteries, and that usually doesn't happen. I am guessing, it is a watch battery on the MB. Do a look up and check.

True enough.
Desktops almost always have a cr2032 cmos battery with a reset jumper beside it.
They're usually accessible enough and held in a little clip socket, so it'd be very easy to replace it.

That battery is responsible for storing bios settings etc, so things can go wrong if it dies.

Laptops (any that I've seen) have a smaller cell soldered to the board. Much harder to replace but I don't think I've ever had to do it.
