routing between analog mixer and daw?

Please forgive me(and point me in the right direction) if I can find this in another thread somewhere. I don't really post much so I figured this would be a safe place.

Here's the deal I have a Mackie 1640 w/firewire card (it's not technically mine but I pretty much have unlimited access to it) and a laptop running Reaper to record with.
I can come directly out of the fw card for multitrack recording and I'm reasonably happy with the results. However, that method completely skips the eq section of the mixer, and I'd like to be able to record the eq while still keeping the multi-track separation. (I think the newer onyx i series, let you choose weather to record the eq through firewire or not). I'm not opposed to picking up a new piece of gear if I need to (i've thought about another interface like an onyx blackbird or saffire pro40, for the rare occasion that the 1640 is not available to me), but I'd like to take advantage of what I already have. Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.
 
You should really EQ after you've recorded. If you EQ on the way in you can never go back. Just Sayin'
 
yeah I totally agree. I think what I was hoping to be able to do was track w/o eq, but then be able to run a copy of (hopefully multiple tracks) back through the mixer to take advantage of the eq on the board. I know there are some good eq plugins and stuff but I really like the eq's on that board for some reason.
 
any ideas? would it be better to post in a different category?
 
You would need an interface with as many outs as you would like to playback through the mixer. You could just run a track at a time out to go through the board eq I suppose. I see only negatives for doing it this way. Just my opinion though.

Or get a 1640i. :D
 
The EQ in any DAW I can think of is streets ahead of the rubbish channel EQ on a Mackie mixer.....I would take extraordinary actions to AVOID Mackie EQ rather than find a way to use it.
 
@jimmy - that's kinda what i figured:( I guess I'll give up on the idea for now.
@bobbsy - I suppose beauty is in the eye (or ear) of the beholder, etc. etc...plus its fun to turn knobs and stuff
