Room treatment

Cheers Rami. I've heard Rockwool does the job too.

Hi Jimmy. You mention that as RW is less rigid it need a frame support. Do you know anywhere that shows how to do that on the web?

Cheers, Ste.

This is the DIY build that I based mine on. Just don't use the batting. It is expensive, useless, and makes the traps look all fluffy and stupid. This weekend I am building another 12 for my drum room. I am going to make the back frame from 1X2's to allow stapling of the fabric as opposed to the spray adhesive I used on the first batch. I found Roxul 80 in 4" thick panels this time too. :)

I've come across this guy time and again, Ethan Winer. I've just watched him put 4' X 2' X 4" traps in the corner of the room.

People really rate him so I wonder why he doesn't use superchunks?

Is there a definitive site, somewhere where everyone would say follow this advice, it's the best out there?

there are so many differnet views, my head is exorcist spinning.

I have heard that straddling a corner with 4" panels is actually more efficient than filling it completely with dense insulation (floor to ceiling). Don't remember where. Also have read that filling a corner with fluffy stuff behind a 4" panel is even better. I wish I remembered where I found this stuff. I'm sure it was one of the guru's on GS.

It may have to do with his type of bass trap. There are traps that pass the audio through and then trap it.
I know with most of his traps, it is recommended that you leave a space behind the trap for max bass trapping (If I remember correctly). His traps are not just filled with a chunk of fiberglass or rockwool. It's a multi-layered membrane of various materials. He has a video on his site that shows the actual construction of his bass traps...check it out.

One thing I would be concerned about is the type of cloth used to cover home-made traps filled with fiberglass or rockwool. Those are both nasty fibers that you don't want to be breathing in all day long. They are microscopic...so even a typical tight-nit cotton sheet will probably pass some through. You don't want ANY getting out into your room...IMO.

You can use panels in the corners. But you can be sure that those corner panels in the video are OC 703 or 705, 705 is denser and more effective at 4" than 703 or Rockwool. So the 4" panel all depends on the material inside.

the specific material you use is rated, look at the chart I sent you, compare the 4" materials at the low frequencies. You will see that different materials have different absorption rates.

Regardless, there is no right answer. I find the panels are much easier to build so I make more panels than superchunks.

that REW link i gave you will let you do the exact same test as in that video you posted. Run the test, add bass traps, run the test again, add more traps if they are needed, rinse and repeat.

You can't find a definitive answer because there isn't one.

Hi Arcadeko.

I can see that there's definitely an obvious bonus to using the OC(even if you double the RW3) but in the UK where I live, you just can't get hold of it, or at least where I've looked.

OC 705 4" (102mm) 6.0 pcf (96 kg/m3) 0.75 1.19 1.17 1.05 0.97 0.98

RW3 2" (50mm) 60kg/m3 0.11 0.60 0.96 0.94 0.92 0.82

I'm gonna search around again.

I know. thats why 4" isn't enough. you gotta make them thicker, 6-8" for the corners.
