first of all, thanks for reading this. this is a sketch of a song (my first in logic) and i wanted to go ahead and see how i can improve the sound overall. there are like 3 theremin trax that have some noise (you'll hear as it comes in) and i would also appreciate comments on the mixing and placement of the individual trax. the beginning and ending are thrown together and the vocals are merely a sketch. i have logic 8 (only learning still) and several mastering plugins (even greener here). any help would be GREATLY appreciated.
it's called Rough Song on Soundclick

i love theremins, but i'm assuming you're using a synth. if not where'd you buy your theremin!?! Anyway i like the mix i can't decipher a single word of the lyrics, but i suppose the song sets a mood more than sends a message. cool stuff.

Sounds interesting. Voice reminds me of Thom York in the Kid A album. Concerning the Theremyn noise you can cut that underisable frequencies using a parametric EQ. Besides that, I have nothing to complain.

It's always cool to hear someone using a theramin!

I think the instrumental mix sounds pretty good for the most part. I might bring some of the keyboard lines up a little. They sound like they're a major part of the melody, but they're pretty hidden.

I was really underwhelmed by the vocals, but you already said they're just a sketch.

I like the bass tone. It really gives the song some oomph.

thanks very much people. it is a Burns b3 theremin (about 200$ i believe and well worth it). they can be tricky to set up and record and i'm extremely lazy-so i'll use what i capture and that's why i'm bugging youses.
when i have my eq up and running, what should i look for or is it strictly listening for the noise? i read threads all the time with people saying "give it a boost @ so-n-so" or "too much at around @$ mhz". i was just wondering where these numbers come from. also it seems that i've read that with a sample of just the room noise, you can analyze what exactly to cut. where to start?
i hope i've done a good enough job of painting a picture of how much of a moron i am with this stuff so that you will be amply touched and endeared by my ignorance.
thanks again. really, yo.

Hi there. I love Theremins too!!

In think the problem is the Theremins don't sound like Theremins and it's sounding like you're using them for the sake of it. I would suggest getting rid of them because they really get in the way. Best used sparingly, as a coloring device IMO.

Have you heard any Barry Gray? He wrote 60s theme tunes (Thunderbirds, stuff like that). Have a listen to his scores for Theremin inspiration!

Good luck :)
