Room mic vs applying a Room reverb

Not really the motors of the ribbon microphones are pretty straight forward (short and long) unless you get into the double filament type.
 
Nice article moresound. I have the Fatheads, and I've been thinking about the RSM-1 or -2.

I don't know if this makes sense, but I would like something that sounds a little more "open"? The fatheads sound kinda compressed and dark, which I really like but for another option I'd like something with a little more high end and a less compressed sound.
 
Well I took my MXL R144 opened it up and removed the inner mess which kinda open up the way it captures the source.

Pick one up used on evilbay and take a shot at it.
 
I'm dumping the room mic :)

On the weekend I found a good solution by adding a room impulse with SIR2 to my close-mic'd SM57. Sounds great, and works the same way every time. :D

The result craps over anything I've tried to do with a close Mic blended with a room mic and I'm sticking with it.

No, sorry. As soon as I got the taste of that simplicity I lost interest very quickly in a room mic. For my purposes, the "fake" one will be just fine. It's an impulse of a guitar cabinet room and it's just give a nice depth to a flat close mic sound. Very happy :)

I never realize how touchy this stuff is. I settle with the idea of just close mic'ing, yeah? So I moved my amp/mic setup back in to the mixing room near my PC for more sustain when I record and even though the mic is in the same spot on the grill, the sound is different and not for the better! Obviously the room is the culprit. Ahhh well, I'll just move it back to it's original "magic" position and there it will stay.

(What's the bet I never get that magic sound again....)

Just my ghetto-style technique thoughts on this: If you have crap mics and crap rooms, make it part of your sound. I use a old train tunnel for backing vocals and a concrete walled laundromat for drum takes just because they are available, and can only ever sound like themselves. If you want pristine, may as well use something digital (or run for pope so you can have cool cathedrals and stuff). If you want character, use what's around. Cheers.
