What are the aux inputs on a mixer used for? Is there a relatively new book that lays out cable routing?

The purpose of auxes on boards are two-fold;
They can be used as extra line inputs or for signal effect processing (which most individuals use it for).
Most boards will have several auxes assigned as "Aux Send"; to send a signal to a outboard effect processor such as 'verbs,compression, equalization etc,and a
"Aux Return" where the effect processor sends the processed signal back to the board.

Aux sends for compression or eq? That's what your channel inserts are for. These require full signal processing not a tap off the main signal which is what an aux is.

Just using those as a figure-of speech in signal processing!
Also I use both methods; I use comping in BOTH auxes
and inserts for across the board and solo track processing.

Pull out all your manuals, That will point to the direction of routing possibilies.... Should be pretty detailed instructions and routing diagrams.....
