ok, I hardly ever ask for advice on getting particular tones/sounds, but I'd really appreciate some opinions on how jeff beck gets that intensely over-driven sound on the intro to his version of "rollin and tumblin"...any ideas?...thanks.

Hmmm - that's a good question.

I listened to it a few times and there seems to be several different things happening.
There's a lot of sampled guitar parts on the whole CD - I'm sure Jeff (or Jennifer?) played them all, but for the effect they sampled them and then tweaked the tones.
The very first melody part sounds like a Floyd Rose (or similar) equipped guitar and is probably run through a major overdrive unit (such as a Boogie or Marshall rackmount) plus assorted sound processing units (Sonic Maximizers, etc.).
There is the 'rhythm' guitar part - which also sounds like a sample - and although there's no doubt Jeff is accomplished enough to play it this perfectly every time, it's just the overall vibe sounds like a sample to me.
There is also a recurring power chord (on the 'and' of one and two) that's a sample.

I guess for me the way they juxtapose the vocalizing against the lead guitar lines is the coolest thing - it sure sounds great - and at 2:14 when the bass and the vocals work off of each other. Yumm!

I guess the way you get a sound like this is to be a world-class guitar player for thirty + years and then go in the studio and wail.

thanks foo...but, what I'm really looking for here are some opinions on "getting that sound" found during the first 6.9 sec. of "rollin n tumblin" from You Had it Coming....I can play the rest of it quite nicely with my 64sg, digitech whammy, vox wahwah, sovtech-BiggMuffPI, BossSE50 and my peavey butcher half-stack on the right, and my fender twin on the left....I can also play the first 6.9 sec., but, I my mojo falls short of jeff's during that critical 6.9 sec. intro....this is my latest project--to LEARN THE TRONS of that intensely overdriven, smooth and somehow "clean"--"check this out first" for 6.9 sec before we roll and tumble sound....I know that post-production accounts for some of it, and I also know just as well that it STARTS and ENDS in beck's hands--while he is connected to TRONS----WHAT ARE THE TRONS? and HOW ARE THEY TWEAKED?...yeh, I realize that the dude is not gonna just give it up--except to maybe his closest confidants....but, surely there is someone out there who has a pretty damn good idea of how it "could" be approached....anyone???..thanks.

Don't feel bad, man - most guys' mojo falls short of Jeff's during just about any 6.9 secs of his playing you might want to mention.

Wish I could help you with the tone - I can only reiterate that it's some major league device wound up really tight with a touch of compression - the only way to know fer sure would be to talk to someone who was at the session.
Sorry I couldn't get you closer.

Hey Twist - Spent about four months on the road and then I done moved from Mississippi to San Diego - and I love it here.

Lots of work and not much time to hang out here . . . and I think this is post number 500!
