Hi. I'm currently scoring a film and I need help on my keyboard real quick.

Info:

Keyboard: Roland XP-80
Sequencing Software: Sonar 2
Sampler: Gigastudio 96
Soundcard: M-Audio Delta 1010LT

Whenever I play sequenced music in Sonar, my instruments go out of tune real bad. Sometimes an instrument leaps several keys up as if an invisible hand is messing around with my pitch wheel.

Also, when I record MIDI, the software captures pitch bends even when I'm not using any (they show up in my Events List in Sonar).

I don't think it's a pitch wheel problem. I think it's with the settings in my XP-80 but I can't figure it out. I've been digging around menus and control panels but I still can't fix it.

Please help!

Try filtering out those messages in your software. There's no need to record all that data if you aren't using it.

Thanks but the instruments go out of tune even on playback. I don't even have to record stuff for the tunes to behave this way. Any other ideas?

Is it just the XP-80 that goes out of tune or, do your software instruents go out of tune too?

If everything goes out of tune, than the data is originating from your PC most likely, and would most likely affect recording and playback. You can still try filtering the control data.

Additionally, I had a similar problem with a Delta44 setup (Not with Sonar though), where every note I played with my Korg N264 played 2 1/2 steps flat from what I was actually playing, using softsynths, or if sequencing back to the N264. Couldn't figure it out. One day for giggles I tried setting the sampling rate different (i.e changed from 48khz to 44.1khz), and the problem went away. At the very least check to make sure your sampling rate in sonar matches the rate you have specified in your Delta control panel, and that in the control panel you specify that other applications can override that current setting. Somebody in the Cakewalk boards was having that problem, like a year ago.
Another thing to try is remove the MIDI cable from either the MIDI in or MIDI out on the XP-80 (If both are currently hooked up, depending on if you are recording-remove The IN cable on the XP-80 or playback-remove the out cable from the XP-80). If the problem goes away, you may have a created somehow a MIDI loop, that is generating the data (similar to a ground loop, or audio feedback loop). If that is the case check the Instrument definitions in Sonar to make sure the problem isn't their, and make sure whatever software is receiving data from Sonar is not looping that data back to the XP-80 (often if you don't specify a default output for software, it defaults to the Physical output). Without knowing exactly how everything is hooked up in your studio than it is hard to know.

But here is the tool I choose to figure these things out, MIDI OX and it's free. Simply open it up assign an input and open the monitor, it will tell you which device is sending the data, what channel etc. Combined with MIDI Yoke (available at same site) really handy for managing multiple physical/virtual inputs/outputs (routing/merging/filtering etc.).
Hope this helps!!!

I've been noticing some strange behavior in the sampling rate settings in my Delta 1010LT panel as well, but it might just be a normal thing. Will have to dig further into the manual.

But, as for your suggestions, I will definitely try them out and will update through this post. Thank you very much. I appreciate your help.
