if you're recording through an external preamp onto a vs1680, then is there a way of disabling the 1680's inbuilt preamp? I read somewhere on this messageboard that even if the roland preamp is turned right down to 0, it will still affect the signal being recorded. any help would be much appreciated

I don't see why if it's at 0 that the signal would be effected by the preamp.

But if you feel that it does then just connect your preamp with a 1/4'' cable into a channel without a preamp.

the signal still passes through the analog stage of the roland..

yes, it still affects it...

1880 "legacy" user here. I asked this question a few years back and the answer was kind of expensive. Roland said that if the trim was turned all the way to LINE, that there was no "preamp coloration" on your track. I also heard several others contradict this.

BUT, you still get the halfway crappy Roland A/D converter in the way of your signal. I ended up buying an Apogee Rosetta 2 channel converter and I go from my preamp--->Apogee--->DIGI IN 1 on the back of my 1880. Be sure to set your clock on the Roland to DIGI IN 1, or it won't accept the signal.

I wondered, are the preamps the same on all 8 input channels on the Rolands? I mean the 2 XLRs vs all of the TS inputs? I know the XLRs have phantom power, but don't you get the same gain?

My line 6 ux2 does this alot better than the Appoge piece for 200 bucks as well as giving the preamp sound you do want as well.

just go through the digital ins on that unit and that will bypass. if you have to go through the analog in i never found it to make much difference noise wise and actually prefer to turn the gain up a hair instead of flat off. i never had a noise problem with the mic pre built in on that 1880vs unless it was cranked past 1 o clock.
